A knife edge along the inside of the hook certainly helps you drive the point deep into the jawbone or bill, but if it catches soft tissue, it can continue cutting. The sharp, strong and stubby style: Some skippers don't like long, sharp points because even the sharpest hook won't catch a fish if the point is turned aside by bone and the hook cuts its way free though soft tissue. Furthermore, filing the point to make knife edges removes some of the thickness of the hook at a place where you might want the strength to keep the point from bending. The problem is especially acute with stainless-steel hooks because the metal is more malleable.
Some veteran fishermen routinely cut back the hook point with a pair of nippers, clipping off the last 1/16 inch. They then file a new dagger point with a knife edge on the inside to help compensate for the fact that the point widens more quickly.
