Processor Laptop computers used to fall short when comparing processing speed with desktop computers. With today's technology, however, those times are soon coming to an end. Manufacturers like Intel and AMD have stepped up their development and are now making processors for laptops that are quite comparable to those of desktops. This allows consumers who want portability to also have the speed and power they need.

Microsoft Jan 7, 2005 (AXcess News) Sunnyvale CA - Chip maker, Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) , said that they were introducing a new family of 64-bit processors called Turin that is competitive to Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) mobile Centrino brand.

CPU Also known as the central processing unit (CPU), the processor is the brain of the computer it's the engine for the software that tells your computer what to do. The main makers of CPU's are Intel and AMD The power of a processor is measured by the megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (GHz) number. The higher the "hertz" number, the faster the processor, though AMD do not use the clock speed as the true rating of the CPU's speed, they use the name of the processor i.e Athlon 2400+, Athlon 2600+ etc. to indicate the performance. Laptop Computers AMD, which expects to begin delivering the Turion chips in early 2005, expects original equipment manufacturers to initially use the thin chips in notebooks, eventually gravitating to desktops.

Time does not stand still and neither do we. We just introduced the newest member of our laptop desk family the Futura Laptop Desk. Last year, we introduced 3 new products and this year, the Futura LTD is our second introduction, after a very successful launch of the Aluminum Desktop stand in March. We named the new lap desk ‘Futura’ because it has a futuristic design with elegant sweeping lines.

Laptop Computer The company said it would not abandon its Sempron products and would continue to support manufacturers who where selling low-cost notebooks.

In June 2001, LapWorks launched the Laptop Desk v1.0. LapWorks' goals were to enable safe typing on laps without slips or burns, and to cool the computer in the process. With the Laptop Desk v2.0, announced in April 2002, LapWorks launched a new category with the industry’ purpose lap desk that doubles as a desktop stand for ergonomic typing on desks. Calero's third product, the Laptop Desk UltraLite, launched in August 2004.

Desktop Computer The new family of 64-bit processors also supports the company's "PowerNow" battery-saving regulator technology, AMD said.

Notebooks The company said that one of Turion's selling points was that customers were not locked into a specific chip set.

Lenovo AMD works with ATI (Nasdaq: ATYT), for its graphical interfaces and Broadcom (Nasdaq: BRCM), and Atheros (Nasdaq: ATHR), for wireless LAN support.

Hard Drive The company said that chip set features would be up to the manufacturers, Turion supports PCs based on 802.11a, b and g.Advertisement

Travelstar Tech pundits are skeptical that AMDs new family of 64-bit processors will gain market share. Its current family of 64-bit processors has gained market share in the server market, but in the PC market, where 32-bit processors are still the norm, that same growth may be a while in coming.

The company defended its position saying that customers interested in notebook computing bought AMD notebooks because they had 64-bit chip sets in them.AXcess News will be reporting on any new market trends related to this story.
