Lenovo Apple joins another notable newcomer, Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq: DELL)which also just released its first official entertainment PC products last week. Both Apple and Dell are hoping to capitalize on the market established by Microsoft's pioneers -HP, Gateway, and Sony- that have all experienced bumps and bruises from the three years it took to establish a true market for Media Center PCs.
Hard Drive According to Current Analysis' retail sell-through panel, the moment has arrived with Media Center PCs reaching an important milestone by capturing 46% of U.S. retail desktop sales in September (73% of those units shipped without a TV tuner).
Travelstar With Media Center PC bundles (PC and LCD monitor combinations) regularly promoted by retailers for under $1,000, it is certain that Apple is taking the high road. Its products offer unique differentiators in design and functionality, but this is offset by the Wintel factor. What is clear is that both Apple and Dell are attempting to unseat the current market leaders, which will ultimately benefit the momentum surrounding the entertainment PCs for the forthcoming holiday season.
Gateway Shares of Apple closed at $53.44, down 56 cents, or 1 percent.
Shares of Dell closed at $33.15, up 22 cents.
