New Oil Tanker Changes Delaware Dredge Debate

Laptop Battery A bigger tanker that can carry more oil upriver certainly would seem to change the nature of the debate surrounding a plan to dredge the Delaware River. Logically, wouldn't such a vessel save refiners money, and lower the price of gas, without necessitating sucking piles of muck from the river bottom?

It is estimated that two tankers a week would travel up the Delaware River to unload at the terminal located here just north of the Salem County border. term operating life of the facility would be created. Some environmental groups, especially in Delaware, have raised public safety concerns about the tankers that would be used to transport the gas.

Thinkpad Maybe. But the situation surrounding a plan to dredge the Delaware River channel from its current 40 feet to 45 feet now has a different look. The General Accounting Office, the federal agency taking a closer look at the plan, no doubt is paying attention.

Microsoft From the beginning, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has based the project on economic benefits oil refiners would reap if they don't have to transfer oil from big carriers to smaller ships to get the product up the river.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Laptop Computers However, the refiners have been hesitant to embrace the project. If the river's channel is deepened, the refiners would have to deepen their own berths, at an unknown cost, to reap the benefits.

Today this bustling metropolis (pop. 600, 000) has the world's biggest port, created when its several harbors were opened directly to the sea, 32km (20 miles) away, by the dredging of a deepwater channel that accommodates even the largest oil tankers. Europoort handles more ships and more cargo every year than any other port in the world. Rotterdam also offers a multitude of small ports that have been transformed into seductive and friendly city neighborhoods.

Laptop Computer Recently, though, a couple of events changed the landscape.

The Army Corps of Engineers plan to deepen the Delaware River has hit another logjam in the form of an appropriations bill. The Corps has been given a only $9 million for the Delaware Main Channel New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania Project by the U.S House of Representatives Energy and Water Conference, according to U.S. Rep. Robert Andrews, Dist., of Haddon Heights, a staunch opponent to the dredging project.

Desktop Computer First, the biggest vessel ever to come up the Delaware River made its way to a Sunoco terminal. The oil tanker Stena Vision has a wide hull and rides higher in the water than other ships its size.

Notebooks Still, it had to unload part of its cargo before making its way up the river.

Lenovo Also, Sunoco, after initial reservations, now supports the $311 million dredging project.

Hard Drive We still think the GAO will discover that this project is a waste of money. If the next generation of ships is able to traverse relatively shallow water, the refiners have to save some lightering money.

Travelstar But Sunoco's new attitude must be considered, too. Are the refiners ready to commit to building those "driveways" to their facilities? Do they have a handle on how much that will cost, especially compared to continued lightering? Will this project provide a national economic benefit through lower gasoline prices?

Gateway All along, dredging proponents have believed that the refiners would fall in line, there would be no environmental damage and the muck sucked from the river bottom would be put to good use.

Laptop Parts Opponents have questioned the alleged economic benefits, worried about the environmental impact and fought a running battle to keep the river muck out of South Jersey.

Software We think that when the GAO finishes its study, it will advise Congress to keep tax dollars safely tucked far away from the dredging project.
