And, the infant mortality rate increased from 6.79 per 1, 000 births in 2004 to 6.89 in 2005. However, this increase was not considered statistically significant. The leading causes of infant death are birth defects, complications from preterm birth and low birth weight. The third leading cause of infant death in the United States is sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

After cryoprotection, the cochlea were sagittally sectioned in a cryostat at a thickness of 15 um. Sections were incubated with rabbit antiserum raised against delta opioid receptor and visualized with biotinylated secondary antibodies and avidin peroxidase complex.
Laptop Computer Results, Discussion and Conclusion : Delta opioid receptor-like immuno-reactivity was demonstrated around the cytoplasm and on the membrane of the inner and outer hair cells of the organ of Corti. In addition, the immunoreactive cells (IR) were also found in the upper part of the limbus and the upper part of the spiral ligament. Within the spiral ganglion, some of bipolar cells were stained by this antiserum. This work has, for the first time, localized opioid receptors in the mammalian cochlea. The results suggest that opioid peptides may bind to these receptors and affect hearing function. Further work is necessary to determine the presence of other opioid receptors subtypes and assess their functional role.
Young children exposed to smoke at home have a higher risk of lower respiratory tract infections and it can increase the severity of asthma in all children. Babies and even unborn foetuses can be affected by smoke. According to the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths, smoking during pregnancy and in the same room as a young baby can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS.) Summary

Electronics Previous epidemiological surveys on various risk factors related to the Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS or Lai Tai) have indicated that the victims of SUNDS have a high incidence of family members who also died or were suspected to have died of SUNDS. Furthermore, it is well known that SUNDS occurs predominantly among males from northeastern region of Thailand and among refugees from Indochina. However, the evidence for the genetic basis and mode of inheritance of SUNDS has not been clearly established. The purpose of this study is to make an intensive pedigree study of families of SUNDS victims in the northeastern region of Thailand, which had more than one (between 2 to 7) member of the family who died of SUNDS. Ten families were selected and included by the criteria that at least the index case of one family member who died with symptoms consistent with the definition of SUNDS (Kotchabhakdi, N.: Japanese Journal of Psychiatry and Neurology 48,135-137,1994) and had also been verified by autopsy either in Singapore or Thailand. The detailed information on the pedigree of these families was obtained through in-depth interviews and by the administration of a set of questionnaires to the living members of the family in their homes. Ten other families with no history of SUNDS/Lai Tai from the same regions served as controls. Although not exclusive, the majority of analyzed pedigrees support the model of a sex-linked recessive transmission related to defects of the human X-chromosome, which would explain the well-known fact that SUNDS victims were predominantly, though not exclusively, males. There were also significantly higher incidences of sleep-associated disturbances, including night terrors, loud snoring and groaning, and sleep apnea syndrome among members of these families than among controls. The present evidence suggests that the cause of death among the victims of SUNDS might involve a genetically inherited predisposing factor related to specific gene loci on the X-chromosome, which is prevalent among males in the northeastern ethnic groups of Thailand.

Infosys Polysomnographic recordings were performed on fourteen males aged between 18-34 years from the northeastern region of Thailand in order to investigate the putative pathophysiological mechanisms of Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS), also known as Lai Tai among Thais. A group of six subjects were siblings of SUNDS victims, who had been verified by autopsy and had a family pedigree of SUNDS suggestive of inheriting a SUNDS genetic predisposing factor. The other group of eight subjects with no family history of a SUNDS death served as the control group for comparison. All subjects participated for two consecutive nights in the sleep laboratory, where their sleep was recorded continuously for the whole night. The recording system was made up of an eight-channel CNS Sleep IT with an additional continuous monitoring of EKG, pulse rate, and non-invasive systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In addition, their sleep behaviour was also recorded on a videotape recorder together with images of the polygraphic traces for later analysis. All records were analyzed by automated computer program for conventional sleep staging, associated
