New Lab to Conduct Research on Security of Electronic Assets of
Enterprises and Individuals
CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 9, 2005 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC),
the global leader in information security, today announced that it
is one of the key private sector sponsors for the establishment of
Dalhousie Universitys Computer Science Privacy and Security Lab.
The lab, located on the universitys main campus in Halifax, Nova
Scotia, Canada, will focus on the security of electronic assets of
industries,
governments, and individuals through research,
education and public policy advocacy.

Laptop Battery Symantecs commitment of $100,000 will go toward the development
of academic programs and curriculum dedicated to the study of
information security-related issues conducted at the lab, and to
faculty positions in support of the lab.
Symantec Research Labs – Europe will be led by Marc Dacier, Ph.D., an internationally recognized expert in computer security. Before joining Symantec Research Labs – Europe, Dr. Dacier taught networking and operational computing security at Eurecom, a graduate school and research center in communications systems and one of Europe’s most active academic research institutions, especially in the field of network and computer security. In addition to his extensive work in academia, Dr. Dacier has also served in industry, perhaps most notably as manager of the Global Security Analysis Lab at IBM Zurich Research Laboratory. Dr. Dacier has served on more than 50 program committees of major security and dependability conferences and has been a member of the editorial board of several technical journals.
Thinkpad Dr. John G. Schwarz, Symantec president and chief operating
officer, will attend an all-day forum held today at Dalhousie
University to formally launch the lab.

Laptop Computers Dr. John McHugh, currently a senior member of the Computer
Emergency Response Team at Carnegie Mellon University, will join
Dalhousie Universitys faculty of Computer Science as director of
the Privacy and Security Lab.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Symantecs University Research Program to support academic research

Carnegie Mellon Universitys CyLab, and has also established
fellowships at Purdue Universitys Center for Education and Research
in Information Assurance and Security to provide scholarship
funding for two graduate students. In addition, Symantec is a

has provided funding and support to the University of Auckland, New
Zealands largest university, for the establishment of an
information security laboratory.
