What do you need
Before you look for a partner, you need to conduct an internal
assessment of your business needs and objectives. Do you need help
with a one-time IT project, or ongoing assistance with certain
aspects of your infrastructure Before doing anything else, it is
important to first detail the scope of your requirements and the
timeframe involved.
Once you have established a clear understanding of your needs and
objectives, it time to look for a partner. Finding available
partners is easy; virtually all major hardware and software
manufacturers link to a partner locator directly from their Web
sites. It choosing the right partner for your business that is the
challenge. Here are some important considerations:
- Location and staff. Some partners will be
geographically closer to you than others. You might consider the
role that proximity can play in cultivating a stronger relationship
with the partner. Many partner companies will subcontract out the
work to be done. Find out if the potential partner will be
utilizing their own staff, or if the people working on your account
will be subcontracted.
- Certification. Consider the potential partner
level of accreditation check that they are certified in
areas of expertise that complement your needs. Major technology
solutions providers offer certifications, demonstrating that a
partner has the qualifications and knowledge to expertly work with
their solutions. While hiring a certified partner may cost a bit
more, it may save you in the end. You could end up spending a lot
more in time and implementation costs to get up and running if you
hire the wrong partner. Certifications also indicate that the
partner has a good relationship with the manufacturer, which can
mean faster access to experts if needed.
- Specialties. SMBs turn to partners for a wide
variety of things: security audits, messaging security, intrusion
detection, backup and storage help, and more. Narrow down the list
of potential partners by seeking only the ones whose core
competencies and areas of specialty mesh with your needs.
- Operations. Ask the potential partner if they
will be able to work within your existing security framework. If
they cannot, have them identify what changes need to be made before
they can begin. Of course, the more the partner can support your
current framework, the more transparent their role will be.
- Cost. Depending on the project, the cost
structure may be a flat fee, an hourly or daily rate, or an ongoing
retainer. Potential partners should give you a proposal that
includes a budget, timetable, and reasonable specifications. The
proposal should be written in a way that is easy to understand. If
the proposal is satisfactory, you should then create a written
contract that specifies what is going to be done and by whom. Make
sure to include dates, deadlines, services to be rendered,
equipment, costs, etc.
- References. Ask the potential partner to
provide references, with similar profiles and needs to yours to
ensure you won end up having to waste time teaching the consultant
about your industry.
Conclusion
Many SMBs are enjoying the added support that IT partners can
provide. If you are considering enlisting the aid of a partner,
choose wisely. Select one that is a artner in every sense of
the word they should take a special interest in your
business, providing guidance that ultimately helps boost your
business success.

Virus Definitions (LiveUpdate Weekly)
LiveUpdate is the easiest way to obtain definitions and product
updates for consumer products. Symantec Security Response fully
tests all the definitions for quality assurance before they are
posted to the LiveUpdate servers. These definitions are released
once each week (usually Wednesdays), unless there is a major
outbreak.
Virus definitions file
A file that provides information to antivirus
software to find and repair risks. In the Symantec
AntiVirus Corporate Edition, the administrator must regularly
distribute updated definition files to the servers and clients of
the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. Definition files contain
protection for all the latest viruses, worms,
Trojans and security risks.
Voice first
A functionality that allows the host and remote users have a voice
conversation before beginning a data session. Use voice first when
you have only one phone line and want to speak with the other user
before starting the session.
- Allows an attacker to execute commands as another user
- Allows an attacker to access data that is contrary to the
specified access restrictions for that data
- Allows an attacker to pose as another entity

Vulnerability assessment
The identification and quantification of a system's technical and
environmental vulnerabilities.
Vulnerability Management
The practice of identifying and removing weaknesses that can be
used to compromise the confidentiality, integrity, or availability
of a computer information asset. A vulnerability management is a
preventative information security practice that identifies and
removes weaknesses before they can be used to compromise a computer
information asset.
Vulnerability measure
A quantitative measurement of vulnerability. Symantec Risk Assessor
measures each vulnerability through its physical exposure,
electronic exposure, potential damage, age, and information.
Vulnerability measure factors
The elements used to calculate the danger posed by a vulnerability
(vulnerability measure). Each vulnerability is rated in terms of
its physical exposure, electronic exposure, potential damage,
information, and age.
Warning
A message that informs the user that performing an action can or
will result in data loss on the user's system.
Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM)
A set of management and Internet standard technologies developed to
unify the management of enterprise computing environments. WBEM
enables the industry to deliver a well-integrated set of
standards-based management tools that leverage emerging Web
technologies.
Wild
The wild component measures the extent to which a virus is already
spreading among computer users. This measurement includes the
number of infected independent sites and computers, the geographic
distribution of infection, the ability of current technology to
combat the threat, and the complexity of the virus.
Wildcard
A symbol that enables multiple matching values to be returned based
on a shared feature. The script language has two wildcards:
- The question mark ( ) stands for any single character.
- The asterisk (*) stands for any character string of any
length.
For example, the file specification *.* would return all the files,
regardless of their file names. The file specification *.sc would
return all the file names with a three-character extension
beginning with sc (such as compusrv.scr, compusrv.scx, and so on).

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
