Thinkpad (AXcess News) Reno, NV - Talk about the tail wagging the dog, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) has said bye-bye to Adobe Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADBE) after the two software companies could not agree on a deal for the license rights to use Adobe PDF in Microsoft's new Office 2007. Adobe wanted to charge for the use of its PDF technology - Microsoft did not.

Microsoft Adobe wanted Microsoft to charge a fee for Adobe's Portable Document Format, or PDF and for Microsoft's rival XML Paper Specification (XPS). Both technologies create clear images of document that can be read from any computer.

Laptop Computers Adobe's Web site says PDF documents comprise almost 10 percent of all content on the Internet and Adobe's PDF Reader is installed on 10 major platforms around the world. Now that Adobe thinks its a "big boy", they seem to no longer want to give users free access to it's program - its reader - now they want you to pay for it and pay on top of the cost of any OS like Microsoft's Windows using the new Office 2007.

Laptop Computer Neithercompany mentioned whether the free Adobe PDF reader used in earlier Microsoft Office Suites will still be accessible, basically, that it will work. Apparently that won't be the case with Microsoft's latest version of Office 2007. It just won't work. But that doesn't mean you can't pay Adobe later in order to use it. Many computer users will pay for it and like the grumble that flies when Gates' company puts out a new Office or Windows version and stops supporting earlier ones via incompatability - we all "pay up."
Invented by Adobe Systems and continuously improved over 15 years, Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) lets users capture and view robust information from any application, on any computer system and share it with anyone around the world. Over 500 million copies of the desktop version of Adobe Reader software have been downloaded worldwide; individuals, businesses, and government agencies everywhere trust and rely on Adobe PDF to communicate their ideas and vision.
Desktop Computer Sometimes, computer users feel like they're riding in a taxi that stops abruptly or won't budge unless you continue to slip cash into it, when it comes to software upgrades that void compatibility which forces you to pay up, over and over again. It's not so bad when a company pays for it, but when it comes out of the pockets of consumers, that's another matter. But don't think I'm overlooking business owners who have to pay for these user licenses as well - I do realize it costs you too!
But this Adobe PDF license 'breakup' with Microsoft is a "big'n" in my view. After all, since when do source tools like Adobe's PDF get to become dictators? And had Microsoft and Adobe agreed to terms, just how would that have been paid for? By Gates' amortizing the cost of the license into Microsoft Office 2007? Or would it have been a "pay if you wanna play" offer, giving computer users the option of buying it? Seems to me that Microsoft should take a lesson in dominance from all of this with Adobe. What goes around comes around and now they know how it feels. Yes, the Adobe deal to Microsoft really is the tail wagging the dog, eh?
