Junior Fishing Club Set
Children up to age 16 are invited to fish from shore or in boats in an all-release, multi-species fishing tournament sponsored by the Islamorada Fishing Club.
Called the Junior Derby, the event kicks off Friday, Nov. 26, with a 5 p.m. rules meeting and ditty bags distribution at the Islamorada Fishing Club, mile marker 82 bayside. Fishing is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, with activities culminating in a 6 p.m. banquet and awards ceremony.
"The derby promotes fishing conservation and provides a fun, family-oriented opportunity for kids to fish and socialize with their peers," said organizer Jim Trice.
Both backcountry and ocean species count in the point accumulation, with a maximum of three of each species to be included.
Fishing awards recognize guided and unguided winners in three categories: "super small fries" up to age 6, "small fries" ages 7-10 and juniors ages 11-16. High-point anglers from the small fry and junior divisions qualify for the 2004 International Game Fish Association Junior World Championship Tournament.
Numerous community members and businesses contribute to the derby's success, and each participant receives five raffle tickets.
The tournament entry fee is $40 per angler, which includes the awards banquet. Additional banquet tickets are $30 per person. Entry forms are available at the Islamorada Fishing Club.
