NJ West Nile Cases Up 41 Percent In 2003, CDC Reports

Laptop Battery Final statistics from the federal government show the number of New Jersey residents infected with West Nile virus last year increased by 41 percent from 2002.

Brault said this makes it easier for the West Nile virus to adapt to rapidly changing environments. The study found that the death rate among crows exposed to the more virulent strain of the virus was 94 percent, compared to 31 percent among crows exposed to a less virulent version, AFP reported. In 2006, 4, 200 people in the United States were infected with the West Nile virus and 177 died. So far this year, only about a dozen deaths have been reported, but the number of infections has increased fourfold compared to the same time last year.

Thinkpad Thirty-four residents tested positive for the virus last year, up from the 24 residents who contracted the disease in 2002, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In New Jersey, officials have reported a lone bird testing positive for West Nile so far this spring. No human cases have been reported in the United States this year. Stephen Ostroff, deputy director of the CDC's national center for infectious diseases, said it was unclear whether the mosquitoes responsible for spreading the virus would pose as much of a health risk to the public as they did in 2002.

Microsoft Statistics show two of the 2003 cases were in Cape May County and one in Cumberland County. There were three West Nile virus-related diseases in 2002, the figures show.

2003, the research found. Specifically, in those two years, it did not report limits to Equifax and Experian in about 80 percent of the cases, and did not report to Trans Union about 65 percent of the time. (Some types of American Express cards don't have credit limits like other revolving accounts.) In 2004, Amex credit limits were missing from 28 percent of the Trans Union accounts and 38 percent of the Experian accounts. But they were absent from 91 percent of the Equifax accounts, the research found.

Laptop Computers Officials with the state Department of Health and Senior Services weren't available to discuss the overall increase in West Nile virus cases.

Although the mortality from bacterial meningitis has dropped in recent years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 10 percent to 14 percent of people who have bacterial meningitis die, and 11 percent to 15 percent of people who recover are disabled (CDC 2005 [meningococcal disease]).

Laptop Computer State health officials said earlier the increase may not mean the situation is growing worse in New Jersey, but is the result of greater awareness of, and testing for, the disease.

Notebooks The human cases in southern New Jersey include:

Lenovo # A 33-year-old Cumberland County man who reported feeling sick on July 28 and was admitted to a hospital Aug. 5. He was discharged three days later and recovered at home. It was the year's first confirmed case of human West Nile virus.

Hard Drive # A 52-year-old Dennis Township, Cape May County, man who died of a ruptured brain aneurysm Sept. 11 was found to have West Nile virus in his blood. State officials said they were unsure whether West Nile virus contributed to his death.

Travelstar # A 34-year-old Wildwood Crest, Cape May County, woman was diagnosed Sept. 25 as having West Nile virus after developing a fever, headache, stiff neck and a rash, all symptoms of the disease. The woman didn't need to be hospitalized and eventually recovered.

Laptop Parts The virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Software Most people who become infected never get sick. About 20 percent develop mild symptoms, such as a fever, headache, muscle aches and fatigue.

Hard Drives While most people recover, an estimated one in 150 people infected with West Nile virus will develop a more severe form of the disease, such as encephalitis or meningitis.

Electronics Health officials say West Nile virus is fatal in only a small percentage of cases.

Canon The West Nile virus crisis has waned in most of the country, but is still a major problem in the West.

Desktop Pc For instance, Colorado reported more than 2,900 cases of West Nile virus, and more than 60 deaths from the disease, in 2003.

Desktop Computers Western states are preparing for another onslaught of the virus, with Wyoming dedicating $1.7 million - up from $387,000 in 2003 - for mosquito control programs this year.
