When a mark appears on the A-Scope, it registers instantly. In comparison, when new marks appear on the leading edge of the main chart picture, they can be lost for a moment as your eye considers the whole chart image. They frequently can also be hidden by range-scale hash marks, information boxes or other screen features.
Notebooks You'll find A-Scope indications to be every bit as accurate and informative as those on the chart picture. The display indicates stronger echoes with flashing bars noticeably thicker from top to bottom and sometimes wider from side to side. Additionally, you'll notice stronger echoes mimic appropriate color, level of brightness or shade of gray depending upon the type of display. A-Scopes make good bar graphs for echo-strength indication, and some experienced skippers use them to determine fish species and bottom composition with surprising accuracy. The unit's gain control affects the A-Scope so be prepared to set it the same way every time to get consistently accurate echo strength readings.
