Thinkpad "We're worried about the impact it would have on the school
district because our schools are crowded now,'' said Board of
Education member Frank Benedetto, adding he could support
construction if developers pick up the tab for extra students.

Laptop Computer There are four developments proposed in the next several years.
The biggest is EnCap, which calls for placing a golf resort and
1,780 town houses and apartments on
land in the Meadowlands now
mostly used for landfills. Other proposals call for building 350
housing units on the old DeMassi Cadillac site, and another 350
units across from town hall as part of a transit village
project. In addition, a project proposed for Riverside Avenue
calls for building a five-story building with 160 one- and
two-bedroom apartments.

to hire an expert to study how development would affect schools. He
said the district will likely revise its long-range plan to include
proposed construction.Abate said the recently renovated high school
could probably accommodate a student influx. The elementary
schools, he said, are a different story. He said class sizes -
ranging between 16 to 24 students - are at peak numbers. If
construction generates a lot of new students in the next two years
the district would not be ready and perhaps would have to consider
split sessions and portable classrooms, he said.
Software But by attracting mostly senior housing developments, the town
could end up benefiting from all the new construction, said James
Hughes, dean of the school of planning and public policy at Rutgers
University. He said age-restricted dwellings "tend to produce
fiscal surplus."
Hard Drives More than half of the apartments and town houses in the EnCap
and Riverside Avenue developments would be for seniors.
Electronics Benedetto said the projects could help pay for a long-talked
about middle school that has an estimated $50 million price
tag.
Canon "The only way to [build a middle school] is to let some of those
projects take place,'' Benedetto said.
Desktop Pc Despite the impact on schools and municipal services, some
officials see the growth as good for a community that has shrunk
from a population of nearly 23,000 people in the 1970s.

Commissioner Mark Gumble said.

urban, Gumble estimated that most of the township's population
hails from Hudson County.
