EPA Lists 15 More Hazards In Sewage Sludge

Laptop Battery The Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday it may start regulating 15 more pollutants contained in the nearly 6 million tons of sewage sludge that are used or disposed of in the United States each year.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad The 15 chemicals -- acetone, anthracene, barium, beryllium, carbon disulfide, 4-chloroaniline, diazinon, fluoranthene, manganese, methyl ethyl ketone, nitrate, nitrite, phenol, pyrene and silver -- already are considered hazardous enough to be a potential threat to the health of people and wildlife species, EPA said.

Microsoft New assessments of the risks that the chemicals pose will be made before any final regulations are proposed, the agency said.

Other sources, though, have found arsenic associated with paint sludge in Ringwood in heavier concentrations than those recorded by Ford. Arsenic, along with lead, chromium and solvents, was listed by the EPA in 1987 as a pollutant in paint sludge in Upper Ringwood.

Laptop Computers Based on the results of those studies, the agency said, EPA "will propose as soon as practicable new regulations ... for any pollutants" in sewage sludge that might be concentrated enough to cause harm.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computer EPA already regulates nine inorganic chemicals in biosolids.

  • Fits up to 15.4" laptop 14"x2"x12"
  • Two full length zippered sections in main compartment
  • Features organizer section for PDA, cell phone, pens, business cards, etc., an MP3 or CD player pouch complete with slit for ear phones, away mesh water bottle holder, front, side and rear pockets, and detachable cell phone case that affixes to chest strap for quick access entry access removable computer sleeve that stores and protects laptops up to 15.4"
  • SmartZipper converts rear pocket to a panel that secures case over a separate wheeled case handle
  • Dual computer access from top and side

Desktop Computer Also Wednesday, EPA denied a petition from 73 labor, environment and farm groups for an immediate moratorium on land-based uses for sewage sludge. That would have affected more than 3 million tons of sludge used each year as fertilizer.

Notebooks Laura Orlando, speaking for the coalition, said EPA was "dodging the ball when no one is looking" by issuing its decision on New Year's Eve.

Lenovo The actions come a year and a half after a National Research Council panel criticized EPA for using outdated science in assessing health risks of treated sludge used as fertilizer. EPA had asked the council for the review. The agency's inspector general also had cited "gaps in the science" used to approve sludge recycling.

Hard Drive The council said EPA standards in 1993 for using sludge-derived fertilizer were based on an unreliable 1988 survey identifying the hazardous chemicals it contains.

Travelstar Since then, the council said, technology for detecting pathogens and methods for assessing health risks have developed significantly.

Gateway Some states, communities and federal scientists have complained that sludge recycling may not be as safe as thought when the government approved it.

Laptop Parts Each year about 5.6 million tons of sewage sludge are used or disposed of in the United States, with 60 percent going to fertilizer and the rest buried in landfills or incinerated. Ocean dumping of sewage was banned in 1992.

Software The agency said in October, after five years of analysis and study, that it would not regulate dioxins in land-applied sludge. It said only a minimal danger exists from dioxins, a class of organic chemicals that EPA's studies show pose a possible cancer risk in humans.

Hard Drives The National Research Council is a part of the National Academy of Sciences, an independent agency chartered by Congress to provide advice to the government on scientific issues.
