Thinkpad (AXcess News) Reno - A mysterious oxygen leak in Discovery was
cause for concern to NASA scientists after finding that the
explosive gas may have leaked into the shuttle's rear engine
compartment during NASA's first Discovery launch Thursday since the
Columbia disaster.

Microsoft NASA scientists had been going over data from the test flight to
the International Space Station when they found indications that
oxygen may have leaked into the engine compartment about two
minutes after the space shuttle's liftoff.

Laptop Computers At first, NASA scientists thought the data may have been
incorrect and an oxygen leak could not have occurred, but they were
unsure so a formal investigation is now underway.

Laptop Computer Before the next shuttle mission can occur, NASA says it has to
be sure an oxygen leak into the engine compartment did not happen
or the mission will be scraped. If an oxygen leak did occur the
highly combustible gas could cause an explosion.

Desktop Computer Kyle Herring, a spokesman for NASA's Johnson Space Center in
Houston was quoted as saying, "We're going to run this thing to
ground and make sure we understand it."
Notebooks When the Discovery was launched into space July 29 NASA
scientists were monitoring data from its 9-minute flight into
orbit. At that time the data being transferred from Discovery to
the NASA space center in Houston gave no indications of a gas
leak.
Lenovo The shuttle Discovery's external fuel tank holds 500,000 gallons
of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen to propel the shuttle into
orbit. NASA said that Discovery's three main engines gave no
indication of any problems and that the flight into space went
smoothly.
Hard Drive NASA said that had there been any shortage of fuel the shuttle
would not have been able to make it into orbit, requiring the use
of its twin orbital maneuvering engines to climb into space and
orbit the Earth.
Travelstar During pre-launch and final launch, NASA monitors the oxygen
level in the engine compartment as well as when the fuel is being
loaded into the shuttle's fuel tank to make sure there is no
build-up of gas that could cause a launch to be aborted.
Gateway The data that caught NASA by surprise was from the space
shuttle's "catch bottles", which monitor the gas levels within
engine compartment, taking random samples of the air. But the data
from catch bottles is not accessible until a flight returns to
Earth, NASA said.
Laptop Parts Four such devices monitor gas levels on all shuttle flights.
Three of those showed the oxygen levels in the engine compartment
were normal but a fourth showed corrupt data.
Software The next shuttle mission is slated for May and NASA hopes to
meet its launch date. NASA said that the investigation into an
oxygen leak will not interfere with its preparation for pre-flight
of that shuttle mission.
Hard Drives Engineers pouring over the oxygen leak data are to report their
findings to NASA control in January.
