Lycos Unveils New HotBot Desktop Toolbar

Lycos Unveils New HotBot Desktop, the First Toolbar to Integrate Desktop Search and Web Search Within the Browser

First Product Allowing Users to Search e-Mail, PC Files, the Web and More, For Free and Without Registration

WALTHAM, Mass., March 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Terra Lycos (Nasdaq: TRLY - News), the global Internet Group, today announced the launch of the new HotBot Desktop, the first true "desktop search" solution in the market today. The HotBot Desktop is an Internet browser toolbar that allows users to search the web, e-mail, files, and browser history, as well as browse, search and subscribe to syndicated news content using the RSS format.
The HotBot Desktop provides users with seamless access to all of their own information as well as the best content on the Web -- all from one toolbar. Users no longer need to switch between their e-mail applications, Windows file browser, or Internet Explorer to find information. Version one of the HotBot Desktop supports indexing and searching of Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail as well as MS Office, PDF and most text-based file formats.

Also included in the HotBot Desktop is an RSS browser that allows users to choose from hundreds of RSS feeds from popular sites included with the product, add their own custom feeds, and search within subscribed RSS feeds. RSS, or "Really Simple Syndication," is a file format experiencing explosive growth on the Internet as a means of distributing news content directly to users. Users can also index their Web browsing history, making it possible for them to search the content of the sites they have visited.

Additional features include a pop-up blocker, keyword highlighting and the ability to create custom shortcuts to search favorite sites.

"The toolbar wars have been ratcheted up a notch over the past several months," said Gary Price, editor and compiler of Resource Shelf, and the co- author of The Invisible Web, published by CyberAge Books. "Lycos should be given kudos for being the first major search company in many years to offer hard drive search capability with a free toolbar. Having a built-in RSS reader and search tool is also very useful."

"Search has really become the equivalent of Internet dial-tone, and the lack of a good solution for searching e-mail and files has been a frustration to Internet users for years," said Lincoln Jackson, senior director of search products for Terra Lycos. "At the same time, the browser and toolbar have become ubiquitous components of the desktop. By combining the two, we have created the ultimate in convenience and functionality for managing and retrieving information."

The HotBot Desktop is free to download at http://www.hotbot.com/tools/desktop/. Lycos formed a strategic alliance with Argo Technology, Inc. (http://www.argo-technology.com), to help develop the HotBot Desktop product.
