Desktop Computer IBM's eight new products, based on Intel's new processors with 64-bit extensions announced Aug 2, represent the largest launch of volume-based servers in the IBM eServer xSeries line since its inception four-years ago.

Notebooks Advanced Micro Devices aims to be in 10 percent of the x86 servers by the end of the year, said Ben Williams, vice president of the server/workstation microprocessor business unit, in an interview Tuesday at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo. Earlier, the company's goal was to account for about 6 percent to 7 percent of the x86 servers shipped by the end of the year, he said.Since these 32-bit to 64-bit extended systems access larger amounts of memory and create added power, thermal and maintenance requirements, IBM has developed Xtended Design Architecture, a feature package that extends the capabilities of IBM's current X-Architecture design principles to the scale-out and distributed 64-bit environment.Though both Intel and IBM were lauding their technologies working together, AMD said that x86 servers already represented 90% of those being sold, which makes AMD's desire to crack the high-speed server market with its own technology breakthroughs.Advertisement

Lenovo But the "big chip" manufacturers aren't the only component companies vying for a piece of the high-speed server market.

Hard Drive Faster processors have forced manufacturers to deal with heat problems and the inability speed itself can bring if motherboards and network cards aren't up to the challenge as well.

Travelstar Markham Ontario-based Perfisans Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB; PFNH) announced the completion of its ACC-1001 Accelerator chip July 26. The ACC-1001 is no ordinary run-of-the-mill chip, according to Perfisans founder, To-Hon Lam.

Gateway Lam explained that, "Perfisans ACC-1001 technology will enable Gigabit Ethernet networks to run 200 to 300% faster than standard available Gigabit networks."Lam's company released an announcement Friday aimed at the semiconductor original equipment manufacturing market, days after IBM, Intel and AMD began touting faster components.

Laptop Parts According to product information found on Perfisans web site, the company is offering an array of semiconductor products; the "TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) Accelerator Chips" that offloads TCP processing from the host CPU, freeing it up as much as 80%. "TOE Accelerated Host BUS Adapters (HBA)", both single and dual port TOE Network Accelerators, and, "iSCSI Accelerators".

Software When Perfisans first announced that its accelerator chip technology was ready for market its shares were trading near $2.00, where the stock had been trading for months. A recent correction brought the company's shares more in-line with its stage of development. Though its thinly traded market could have affected its price, lovers of nanotech stocks are beginning to watch the company for news.
