Summer School - Waterstart, Jibe, & Planing

Author: Andy Brandt
Have you ever heard the sports phrase, Look down, fall down? Coaches of contact sports like football and hockey use it a lot because if a player is looking down when he gets bumped, he's much more liable to lose his balance and leverage against other players than he is if he's looking up and in the direction that he wants to go. While windsurfing isn't a contact sport, balance and leverage are major components of sailing, and your head plays a major role in keeping your balance and maintaining leverage against the sail.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Laptop Computers When windsurfing, sometimes you need your head to be hiked out a bit away from your shoulders, creating leverage, while at other times you need your head in over your feet to create a minimum of resistance. To illustrate, try this exercise. Start by standing up straight, then tilt your head down and place your chin against your chest. Next, lift your hips upward and forward. If you're like most folks, this position probably doesn't feel too comfortable. Now try the same thing only lift your head and look straight in front of you. Feel better?

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computer If your head is tilted down when you're windsurfing, it's very difficult to keep your hips in toward the sail because it's an uncomfortable position in which to be. This fundamental concept is especially true for first-timers. Because a beginner is just learning to stand up and balance with the sail, he loses all leverage if he tilts his head down, and the sail tends to pull him over. However, if a beginner looks up, he'll not only tend to improve his leverage against the sail, but also improve his general sailing awareness.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Desktop Computer This concept of tilting your head can work the other way as well. During beachstarts and waterstarts, for example, you want to lose your leverage against the sail or, rather, provide as little resistance against it as possible to allow the sail to pull you up onto the board. So, as you add power to the sail, keep your head tucked down and allow it to roll over your foot and up onto the board. If you keep your head up during a beach- or waterstart, it makes it difficult to leave your hips out over the water, which tends to cause your hips to swing in and create more leverage - just what you don't want in this case.

Notebooks Try another land experiment to illustrate the concept. Stand up straight again, but this time start with your head tilted back and looking up. Then push your hips out behind you while continuing to look up. Pretty awkward, huh? Now do the same thing but look down. Much better, don't you think?

Lenovo This head and hips concept applies to a number windsurfing maneuvers. For sailing fast, windsurfers generally sail in the foot straps and use short harness lines, for instance, which means really having to heft your hips up and in to hook in. And, if you're like a lot of sailors, you probably look down to accomplish this. However, using what we've learned, we now know that looking down while pushing your hips up and in is very uncomfortable. So don't look down while hooking in. By continuing to look forward and hooking in blindly, the sail remains still and there are no surprise changes in power or direction.

Hard Drive Another good illustration of this concept, particularly the hip motion, is during a jibe. At the beginning of a pivot jibe, for example, your hips are facing outward, allowing you to lighten your feet as you back up on the board. Minimal sail power is required. But once the board turns straight downwind and the entire sail is exposed to the wind, your hips should be in and your head should be up to create leverage enough to deal with the full power of the sail. You change your feet with your hips to shift your weight properly, and once the sail has flipped, your hips angle outward.

Travelstar Up until now, the examples of when to push your hips out and when to pull them in have been fairly cut and dry. However there are areas where this hip action is not so clear-cut. One of the most elusive goals in windsurfing, for instance, is actually continuing to plane through the planing jibe - hence the name. And the reason that keeping on a plane during this maneuver is so elusive is because most sailors don't have a clear understanding of where their hips should be during the various phases of the move. Making the transition of your hips being out over the water to in over the board correctly allows you to maintain awesome entry speed, which is the key to a planing jibe.

Gateway To help understand this transition, there's one more land exercise to try. Stand up with your hips out and behind you, your head looking forward and your knees bent. Now, without standing up, push your hips forward and in over your feet. Feel the increasing toe pressure as you move. This is the same feeling that you want to achieve when entering the planing jibe.

Laptop Parts When you set up, hang your hips out and down, and then slowly roll your hips over your feet (mainly over your back foot). The slower you learn to roll your hips, the better the board speed throughout the entry. Once in the middle of the carve section, keeping your hips in and your head up gives you unconscious toe pressure, which creates a smooth carve and gives your body a stable and balanced position. Then, with your back straight and head up, switch your feet and flip the sail. And finally, hang your hips out and head down (but keep looking forward) to re-accelerate the board on its new tack.
