"With this strong growth, the market for GSM-based infrastructure is far from dead," said Greg Collins, Senior Director of mobile infrastructure research at Dell'Oro Group. "While many developed regions are deploying WCDMA networks and launching services, service providers are also investing heavily in EDGE as a way to provide higher-speed data services across their coverage areas. In addition, demand for more basic voice services is particularly strong in developing regions in Asia, Europe, and Africa."

Chevron's revenue increased 28 percent while Conoco's rose 37 percent. General Electric Co. ( GE) fell to the No. 7 Fortune 500 rank after reporting revenues of $157 billion while Citigroup ( C) and insurer, American International Group ( AIC), followed at Nos. 8 and 9, the same Fortune 500places they held last year. International Business Machines Corp. ( IBM) held onto its No. 10 ranking in the magazine's list of the top 500 companies.

The Dell'Oro Group report also shows the market for WCDMA infrastructure equipment in 2Q04 fell 19 percent on a sequential basis after strong growth in 2H03. Despite this temporary contraction, Dell'Oro Group forecasts the WCDMA market to grow in excess of 50 percent in 2004.
