Thinkpad (AXcess News) New York - Who will govern the Internet is
expected to be aheated debate at the World Summit on the
Information Society (WSIS) in Tunis, Tunisia this week, which
expects to draw about 11,000 participants, from heads of States to
representatives of the private sector and civil society.

Commission for Africa (ECA) held the African Regional Preparatory
Conference in Accra, Ghana, in February, drawing over 2,000 African
experts in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). They
held discussions on an African-led roadmap for ICT development on
the continent.

launched Bridging the Rural Digital Divide, a program to promote a

consideration to how and why technologies can improve livelihoods,
according to Anton Mangstl, Director of FAO's Library and
Documentation Systems Division.

be focused on education, information sharing, and communication,"
he said.

vital role in information sharing. These communities have a wealth
of local agricultural knowledge to contribute," Mr. Mangstl
noted.

Union's cooperation will need to be addressed. The bright spot in
the WSIS summit is that it's got nations talking about the Internet
and what they could do with it to better their society. The EU is
looking at cooperating among its member countries in regulating the
Internet across all member country's boarders, rather than each
nation individually setting its own rules. Hopefully, more talks
will develop that creates a more global spirit in developing and
regulating the Internet.
