Park Service Is Seeking Big Increase In Money For Mass Transit

Laptop Battery In an effort to reduce congestion and pollution in the national parks, the National Park Service is asking Congress to increase financing for public transportation in the parks when it reconvenes this fall, Park Service officials said this week.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Microsoft Buses, trolleys and railcars are used at almost a quarter of national parks to deal with the annual attendance of more than 250 million visitors. While some transportation systems have improved the quality of the parks, many low-budget ones are out of date and unpopular with visitors, Park Service officials said.

Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.

Laptop Computers "I am pleased to see that the Park Service is trying innovative approaches to allow people to enjoy the parks without the hassles of competing for parking spaces and driving on clogged roads," said Senator Daniel K. Akaka, Democrat of Hawaii, who is chairman of the national parks subcommittee. "Sustained funding for these new and innovative approaches to park visitation is an ongoing problem."

Reliable, affordable mass transit is critical to people with disabilities and good policy for all New Jersey. The more folks we register, the stronger our base to call for changes and improvements in mass transit service. Educated, registered mass transit riders are good for the state of New Jersey.

Laptop Computer Some parks, like Acadia National Park in Maine, have been able to use mass transit to reduce the number of cars greatly and, as a result, have seen a sharp decline in air pollution. At Acadia, which has an optional park shuttle, the amount of air pollution was cut during a recent 80-day tourist season by an amount equal to closing a small factory for a year. The shuttle also reduced the number of vehicle miles travelled in the park by 1.3 million miles, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection estimated.

effective way to help boost performance, allow you to open more applications at once and save time and hassle. Since IBM is responsible for the design, testing, manufacturing and quality of IBM memory, compatibility with your IBM computer is backed by IBM Service and Support.

Desktop Computer At Zion National Park in Utah, where visits have risen even as many other parks report a leveling off of visitors, the mandatory bus system has been popular. It runs every 5 to 10 minutes and makes frequent stops in the park and the neighboring town, officials said. The park's $20 entrance fee subsidizes the shuttle system, which cost more than $29 million to set up.

Notebooks Transportation systems at some other parks have not been as popular. The bus systems at Yosemite National Park and Yellowstone National Park do not run regularly enough or make enough stops to be convenient for most visitors, park advocates say.

Lenovo "The Yosemite system, which is one of the oldest in any major national park, is still pretty inadequate," said Ronald J. Tipton, vice president of programs for the National Park Conservation Association, an advocacy group here.

Hard Drive So far, there are no vocal Congressional opponents of increases for park transportation budgets, agency officials say. But Congress stalled a previous transportation plan in December 2000 that would have built a $180 million rail system in Grand Canyon National Park, one of the most visited and polluted parks.

Travelstar "You're always going to have a level of discomfort when you start talking about alternatives to the automobile," said Jim Evans, an official at the alternative transportation department at the Park Service.

Gateway Opponents of the Grand Canyon rail system wanted the Park Service to consider transportation systems that would be less expensive for visitors before the agency invested in the multimillion-dollar project.

Laptop Parts If the parks do not become less polluted and congested, agency officials said, people will stop using them. The number of visits to national parks has been relatively stagnant for the past three years and appears to be declining this year, officials said, though final attendance figures will not be available until the end of the tourist season, after Labor Day.

Software "People are coming to the parks to enjoy themselves and feel like they are relaxing, not like they are going to a city," said Lou Delorme, head of park facilities and transportation at the Park Service.
