Microsoft Of course, it is still vital to try to get away from city light
pollution - many miles away, if possible - if you want to see the
splendor of the starry heavens. Locally, we are seeing some efforts
to actually limit or reduce light pollution, a topic I'll explore
in an upcoming column.
Saturn will be high in the southwest at dusk. Keeping it company will be the constellation Leo the Lion, including Leo's brightest star, Regulus, a short distance to the right (west) of the planet. Saturn's biggest and brightest moon, Titan, will be north of the planet on May 12 and 28, and south of it on May 4 and 20.
Laptop Computers But today, let me limit my discussion of starry sights to some
that can be glimpsed through even moderately bad light pollution -
the brightest stars of spring and Leo the Lion.

point of light in the sky remains the planet Jupiter, which at this
hour is moderately high in the west. Well to the left (slightly
upper left) of Jupiter, in the southwest sky, shines one of the
brightest stars, although much dimmer than Jupiter.

Desktop Computer This star is Regulus, whose name means "the little king." Reglus
shines in the constellation of the king of beasts - Leo the
Lion.
Notebooks Reglus marks the heart of Leo and, if you look closely, you can
trace a hook of stars upward from Regulus to form the outline of
the Lion's chest, mane and face. This hook is sometimes called "the
Sickle," with Regulus marking the handle end. Or think of this
pattern as a backward question-mark, with Regulus as the dot at the
bottom.
Lenovo The hindquarters of Leo is an only modestly bright right
triangle of stars. Look for it to the upper left of Regulus at this
hour, more than one fist-width at arm's length from the bright
star.
Hard Drive If on a clear night this week even the Sickle of Leo is hard for
you to see, you must have a serious problem with light pollution -
excessive or misdirected outdoor lighting which does no one any
good.
Travelstar But perhaps you can still detect the spring sky's very brightest
stars and star patterns.
Gateway The brightest and most famous star pattern that is well placed
in spring is the Big Dipper. It hangs prominently high in the north
on April and May evenings. Extend the curve of the Big Dipper's
handle outward and it will bring you to the single brightest star
of spring - Arcturus. Can you tell that there is a little bit of
orange in its light?
Laptop Parts If you continue the curve, your eye eventually comes to the
rather brilliant star Spica, partway up the south sky.
Software You will notice some bright stars shining in the west and
northwest but they will be setting by late evening. In the
northeast there is a bright star that is ascending - Vega. This
sight of Vega coming up is a harbinger of the summer evenings when
it will shine high overhead.
