Microsoft Jan 2, 2005 (AXcess News) New York - Four weeks before historic national elections in Iraq, U.S. lawmakers of both parties are voicing cautious optimism about prospects for a successful, if imperfect, democratic exercise in the violence-wracked nation.
The new secretary of state says she has talked to President Bush about the election. She says the president is encouraged by the Iraqi people, and their commitment to a better future. "Well, he just said, this is a great day for the Iraqi people, " said Ms. Rice. Speaking on the Fox News Sunday television program as polls were closing, Condoleezza Rice said the election was not perfect, and there were scattered acts of violence. But she stressed that, overall, Iraq has taken a huge step forward."This election is, of course, a first step, " she said. "And what it really says is the Iraqi people are not prepared to be fearful and intimidated and kept from their right to exercise their voice."Ms. Rice said U.S. military commanders in Iraq report Iraqi security forces are performing well, and said the aim now is to reach the point where the Iraqi people can protect

Speaking on ABC's This Week program, Senator Lieberman said the month of January will bring, in his words, "historic transformation in the Middle East," with Palestinians choosing a president January 9 and Iraqis holding national elections on January 30.

Both candidates for the Senate seat in Alaska supported drilling in ANWR. Lisa Murkowski, fought victory against former governor Tony Knowles, said the day after the election she is expecting U.S. lawmakers will move to open up the area to oil drilling.

But Secretary of State Colin Powell predicted Iraq's Shiite population will, as he put it, "stand on their own two feet," and argued for faith in the democratic process.

"The Saddam Hussein regime is gone, just as the Taleban regime in Afghanistan is gone.
