Desktop Computer The new test relies on a vehicle's onboard computers and a slew of sensors to diagnose problems with the emissions system. For drivers, the key component is the "check engine" light.

Keyboard New Jersey officials say short-term repair costs for motorists could increase as a result of the new system, but echo the EPA's Milbourn by saying it will avert higher costs in the future.
Monitor "We are aware, based on studies that other states have done, that there could be an increase for the motorists," said state Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Elaine Makatura. "We are aware that there is a potential."

New car owners are first scheduled for an inspection four years after their purchase. By then, many manufacturers' warranties, typically three years or 36,000 miles, will have expired.
