Troubleshooting network printing

Sometimes when you re printing to a remote printer, you see an error message indicating that there was a problem printing to the port. (The port is the path to the remote computer that has the printer attached.) Before you panic, check the condition of all the hardware. cisco

Check the print server

Computers that have printers attached (called print servers) have to be turned on if you want to print from a remote computer. If the computer is turned off, turn it on. It doesn t matter whether you know the logon password for the user name that appears during the logon process; nobody has to be logged on to a computer to use its shared printer. The Windows operating system on that computer simply must be started. keyboard

Check the printer

Make sure that the printer is turned on. Check any buttons, indicator lights, or message windows that may be trying to tell you that something is amiss. Giving Spyware the Boot:Dummies Home Networking For Dummies, 4th Edition Giving Spyware the Boot Adapted From: Home Networking For Dummies, 4th Edition Printer-ready version

Not even James Bond could bring any glamour to the nastiness of spyware, which is a software program that installs itself (without your knowledge) on your computer. After it s installed, the software collects information about you, and when you re online it sends the information to the spyware program s owner. Most spyware fits into either of two categories: lap top

How spyware works

Surveillance spyware scans documents on your computer and can capture your keystrokes as you type. It can spy on forms you re filling out on a Web site (such as your login password or your credit card number) and the text you enter in a chat window. Government and detective agencies have been known to use this type of software, as have jealous spouses. refurbished

Advertising spyware is software that is installed when you re installing other software (usually software you download from the Internet) or that is installed in the background while you re visiting a Web site. It s common for advertising spyware to be included (without your being told) when you install software that s advertised as free, if you don t mind seeing advertisements when you use it. One of the most pervasive distributors of spyware is software you download to take advantage of peer to peer file exchanges (for music and video). Advertising spyware logs information about your computer and about you. The information includes passwords, your Web browsing habits, your online buying habits, and so on. memory

Both types of spyware can also install viruses and worms on your computer. Many of them change your browser settings (such as your home page), and your efforts to correct the changes are temporary; the spyware changes them again. intel

One of the annoying features of spyware is its connection to pop-up ads. Using the information it has collected about you, the spyware initiates pop-up ads whenever you connect to a Web site. The spyware software producer receives income whenever you respond to one of these pop-up ads, so the theory is the more the better. After a while, using the Internet becomes almost impossible because of the barrage of pop-ups. Regardless of your Internet Explorer controls for your children, the pop-ups often contain pornography. as400

How to get rid of it

The only way to remove spyware from your computer is to use software designed for that purpose. The following two programs are well regarded by computer professionals: averatec

  • Ad-Aware from Lavasoft.com Lavasoft.com hardware

  • Spybot S D (for Search Destroy) Spybot.com dual xeon

Adding a New Slide to Your PowerPoint Presentation:Dummies PowerPoint 2003 for Dummies Adding a New Slide to Your PowerPoint Presentation Adapted From: PowerPoint 2003 for Dummies Printer-ready version

What if you have some great new stuff to add to a PowerPoint slideshow but you don t want to start a whole new presentation from scratch Or, perhaps you ve used the AutoContent Wizard to create a presentation, but the slides it created for you just don t cover everything you d meant to include. Although you may be able to adapt some of the prebuilt slides by editing their titles and text objects, you need to add slides of your own. samsung

You re in luck! PowerPoint gives you about 50 ways to add new slides to your presentation. You see three of them here: computer repair

In all three cases, PowerPoint displays the Slide Layout Pane alongside the new slide. This pane enables you to pick from 27 types of slide layouts. Just click the mouse on the one that you want to use and PowerPoint sets the new slide to the layout of your choosing. desktops

Each slide layout has a name, which you can see by hovering the mouse pointer over the layout for a moment. The layout that s highlighted in Figure 1 is called Title and Text. The layout name indicates the types of objects that are included in the layout. For example, the Text layout includes a text object. A typical Text slide. You ll probably use the Text layout most. It s the best format for presenting a topic along with several supporting points. For example, Figure 1 shows a typical bulleted list slide, in which a list of bulleted items describes signs that your son is headed down the road toward moral decay. One of the layouts available in the AutoLayout section of the New Slide dialog box is named Blank. This layout doesn t include any objects; it is a blank slate that you can use to create a slide that doesn t fit any of the predefined layouts. All slide layouts except Blank include a single-line text object that serves as a title for the slide. This title is formatted consistently from slide to slide in order to give your presentation a professional look. hosting

Using Quicken 2007 to Track PayPal Transactions - Dummies Quicken 2007 For Dummies Using Quicken 2007 to Track PayPal Transactions Adapted From: Quicken 2007 For Dummies Printer-ready version

If you use PayPal, you can and should use Quicken to track the money flowing into and out of your PayPal account. Fortunately, tracking a PayPal account with Quicken is pretty dang easy. internet

To track PayPal using Quicken, you want to remember these points: cheap computer

  • A PayPal account is really just another bank account albeit a special sort of bank account. Accordingly, you want to set up a Quicken PayPal account in the same way that you set up any other Quicken bank account. digital camera

  • If you use your credit card to pay money into the PayPal account, you re actually transferring money from your credit card account to your PayPal account. To record this transfer, you record a credit card charge into your credit card register. However, rather than use a Quicken category, you specify the PayPal account. printer

  • You should reconcile your PayPal account just like any other bank account or credit card account. During this reconciliation, be sure to record any PayPal charges. xseries

Creating Readable Slides in PowerPoint 2003:Dummies PowerPoint 2003 for Dummies Creating Readable Slides in PowerPoint 2003 Adapted From: PowerPoint 2003 for Dummies Printer-ready version

Here are a few random tips and pointers that will help you produce readable slides. data storage

Try reading the slide from the back of the room

The No. 1 rule of creating readable slides is that everyone in the room must be able to read them. If you re not sure, there s one sure way to find out: Try it. Fire up the projector, call up the slide, walk to the back of the room, and see if you can read it. If you can t, you ll have to make an adjustment. hitachi

Remember that everyone s eyesight may not be as good as yours. If you have perfect vision, squint a little when you get to the back of the room to see how the slide may appear to someone whose vision isn t perfect. rational

No more than five bullets, please

Ever notice how David Letterman uses two slides to display his Top Ten lists Dave s producers know that ten items is way too many for one screen. Five is just right. You may be able to slip in six now and again, but if you re up to seven or eight, try breaking the slide into two slides. websphere

Avoid small text

If you can t read a slide from the back of the room, it s probably because the text is too small. The rule of thumb is that 24-point type is the smallest you should use for text that you want people to read. A 12-point type may be perfectly readable in a Word document, but it s way too small for PowerPoint. battery

Avoid excessive verbiage leading to excessively lengthy text that is not only redundant but also repetitive and reiterative

See This heading would have been more efficient if it were, Be Brief. it support

Use consistent wording

One sign of an amateur presentation is wording in bullet lists that isn t grammatically consistent. Consider this list: western digital

  • Profits will be improved music

  • Expanding markets networks

  • It will reduce the amount of overseas competition toner

  • Production increase cheap laptops

Each sentence uses a different grammatical construction. The same points made with consistent wording have a more natural flow and make a more compelling case: wholesale

  • Improved profits brother

  • Expanded markets netvista

  • Reduced overseas competition camera

  • Increased production networking

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
