Views Differ On Vernon Park Swap

Laptop Battery The prospect of creating a township park on the Vandokkenburg farm poses new considerations as the governing body explores a land swap with the Maple Grange property. Two key individuals in Vernon have different viewpoints when they envision the future of the 100-acre farmland.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad Vernon Mayor John Logan regards the open land as potential recreational fields.

Laptop Computer Storm runoff from fertilizers and pesticides used on the athletic fields could change the pH of the limestone fens, thereby introducing woody plants in succession, said Miranda, a naturalist for 15 years. This could alter the character of the habitat, and destroy the habitat the bog turtle requires.

Desktop Computer The Vernon Civic Association is a group of people focused on the environmental, fiscal and community issues affecting Vernon. It is also in litigation with the township over pending development.

Notebooks Vernon has been trying to build recreational fields for over a decade without much success. Over 6,000 Vernon residents use township and school board education fields for township recreation programs.

Lenovo Both sides support the need for more fields.

Hard Drive Preliminary findings of the latest option raise more questions about suitable lands to fulfill the townships needs for recreational fields.

Travelstar We want to understand everything we are getting ourselves into, said Councilman Greg Haines.

Gateway Now the Township Council is considering whether to swap the Maple Grange tract for approximately 100 acres of farmland owned by the Vandokkenburg family. Wilbur Vandokkenburg died this summer, leaving behind his legacy of about 60 years to his descendants. At one time, he and his wife, Alice, built up the farm to 1,000 acres, raising cattle and growing alfalfa and corn.

Laptop Parts The parcel being considered is located just north of the Appalachian Motel, near the corner of Maple Grange Road and Route 94. The land also serves as a portion of the viewshed from the Appalachian Trail, said Miranda.

Software With the defeat of the $1.9 million bond ordinance for park improvements at the Maple Grange site, and grading improvement costs topping $2 million, the possibility of a land swap inspires hope to those who have long sought a place to build for a township park.

Hard Drives The (Vandokkenburg) property has a lot of potential, said Logan, comparing the flatter land to the steeper grades of Maple Grange. If we move forward with the swap, I can see the town constructing a modest initial phase to address current recreational needs, while having significant additional flat land with which to address future needs.

Electronics Unanswered questions remain, such as environmental issues, of wetlands and endangered species; historical constraints; and the value and the topography of the property on Route 94. Another key issue is what will become of the Maple Grange property if the deal goes through.

Canon The council needs to anticipate the discussion (as to) why the Vandokkenburgs are interested in a swap, said resident Jack McLaughlin to the council earlier this month. I think that needs to be addressed. What is the intention of the Vandokkenburg interest on the Maple Grange property?

Desktop Pc McLaughlin is general manager for Highland Lakes Country Club and Community Association.

Desktop Computers Logan said the zoning of the Maple Grange property helps facilitate negotiations for the land swap. Based on zoning, its fairly obvious, responded Logan. Vandokkenburgs land is zoned agro-eco-tourism, which allows for the development of a centrally located town park, while the grade-challenged Maple Grange property is zoned commercial-recreation, which presents additional private development options. That property (Maple Grange) is our currency. Each party to the potential swap sees value. We have the potential for a win/win, with Vernons kids and taxpayers coming out on top.

Think Pad The 180-acre park site on Maple Grange Road was purchased by the council in 1999 for $1 million under the administration of former mayor James Kilby and former deputy mayor Dan Kadish.

Repair Kadish, a dairy and beef farmer, agrees with Miranda that the Vandokkenburg property should continued to be utilized as farmland.

Data Recovery Why take good agricultural land out of circulation? said Kadish. We dont have that much agricultural land left in Vernon.

Cisco Less than five farms currently operate in Vernon.

Keyboard As an effort to increase public awareness, Haines delivered a 20-minute power point presentation at last weeks council meeting. He explained key points related to the swap, including descriptions of both properties; questions related to the swap; and necessary steps, which still need to be taken.

Monitor Despite recent e-mail communications questioning the suitability of the swap, less than 10 residents were present for Haines presentation.

Desktop The proposed swap would not include portions of the Maple Grange property, including approximately five acres for the proposed cell tower; and an access easement to the proposed cell tower site. Logan anticipates the cell tower could generate upwards of $100,000 annually for the township.

Infosys Vernon would also retain ownership of the controversial 40 acres on Maple Grange. Vernon environmentalists joined with the Lenni-Lenape Indian tribe to preserve the parcel inhabited by American Indians more than 8,000 years ago. The state deemed the land historic.

Refurbished Laptops Steps needed before contracts are signed: Appraisals; mapping; review by the state; and negotiating a deal with the owner.
