Thinkpad Hydropower consultant and entrepreneur Michael Coates, president of Acton Hydro Co., bought the idle power plant in June 2001 and has been fixing it up. The plant, built in 1923, is in a small brick building next to a dam at the end of Old High Street in Acton.

Laptop Computers The Concord Municipal Light Plant has agreed to buy the electricity that the Acton Hydro plant will produce and is offering its residential customers the option to be involved. So far, 36 customers have signed up for the Concord Light Plant's green power program, according to Dale Cronan, assistant superintendent of the plant, and another 65 have expressed an interest in the project.

Laptop Computer The customers who have signed up have agreed to pay between $3 and $36 extra every two months and will receive nothing tangible in return. ''It's kind of a make-you-feel-good thing," Cronan said. What the customers will receive is the knowledge that they are doing something positive for the environment. ''Everything that we can do to save fossil-fuel energy is important," said Sarah Chapin, who will pay an additional $3 every two months.

Desktop Computer The reason for the extra charge is that the Light Plant will pay Acton Hydro 3 cents more per kilowatt-hour than it pays its regular energy supplier, Constellation Energy, according to Cronan. The Light plant pays Constellation Energy 4 cents per kilowatt-hour and will pay Acton Hydro 7 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Notebooks Most Light Plant customers are billed every two months and can sign up to pay an extra $3 on each bill to support the purchase of a 100-kilowatt-hour block of Acton Hydro-generated power. The first 36 green power customers signed up for between 100 and 1,200 kilowatt-hours each, for a total of 90,000 kilowatt-hours annually, according to Cronan.
Lenovo Richard Parmelee has volunteered to pay an extra $15 every two months to support the Acton Hydro project. Parmelee said he is an engineer, and in the 1960s saw firsthand the pollutants sent into the atmosphere by a coal-fired plant in Ohio. Although the air quality regulations are stricter now than then, there is still a lot of pollution generated by power plants, he said. "This is a very low-cost way to support green power," he said.
Hard Drive The amount of power that the Acton Hydro plant will produce is a very small percentage of that used by light plant customers, according to Cronan. The most the plant can be expected to produce, in a good year with plenty of rainfall, is 500,000 kilowatt-hours, he said. Concord residents and businesses annually gobble up 175 million kilowatt-hours, he said.
Travelstar Purchasing the entire annual output of the Acton Hydro plant will cost at most an additional $15,000, a drop in the bucket of the Light Plant's $10 million annual bill from Constellation Energy, Cronan said. The Light Plant will cover from its budget any of the extra cost that customers don't voluntarily agree to pay.
Gateway There is no way for anyone to know the actual source of the electricity going down the wires and into a particular home, Cronan said. However, the electricity that the Light Plant will purchase from Acton Hydro will reduce the amount that needs to be generated in some other way. He said that the power Constellation Energy supplies to New England comes from a mix of sources, including nuclear power, fossil fuels, biomass, large hydro plants, and small hydro and alternative sources.
Laptop Parts Ironically, the Acton Hydro plant was built in 1923 to generate electricity for a dirty and dangerous business: the manufacture of gunpowder. Between 1835 and 1940, gunpowder was manufactured in what grew to a 40-building complex along Powdermill Road (Route 62), where Acton, Concord, Maynard, and Sudbury meet.
Software In 1853, Henry David Thoreau described in his journal hearing an explosion at the powder mills, seeing smoke, and viewing the remains of three men killed and the wreckage of buildings strewn about.
Hard Drives When the gunpowder manufacturing operation shut down, its hydro plant continued to produce electricity for local use until 1964. After that, the plant was idle until the 1980s, when a series of entrepreneurs took ownership, restored it, and sold the power to Boston Edison. However, these ventures were apparently not financially successful, according to Cronan, because the plant owners were unable to sell their power for a high enough price.
Electronics When Coates purchased the plant, it had not produced power for about six months. He has slowly repaired the facility, as time and money allowed. "My aim is to have it be part of our income," Coates said. "It's not big enough to ever be a full income for the family."
Canon Coates and his wife, Ann, have eight children ranging in age from 10 to 24.
Desktop Pc He said the revenue from electricity sales will have to be plowed back into improving the plant for some years. "The turbine is 80 years old," he said. "My hat's off to whoever built it, but it needs to be replaced."
Desktop Computers Coates, a mechanical engineer who lives in Northborough, is self-employed as an engineering consultant, and most of his clients are hydroelectric power plant owners. He worked for the New England Power Service Co. for 16 years, becoming involved in projects at the 15 hydroelectric plants on the Deerfield and Connecticut rivers formerly owned by the New England Power Co.
