Baseball fans express concern about coverage

We are responding to the article in the April 6, 2000 issue of Chips slamming the baseball team. We assumed that someone that does not attend Luther wrote it. However, not only was the article written by a Luther student, but one we have yet to see at a home game.

The article opened by emphasizing the team's worst game of the year. As all sports fans know, some days everything goes right for one team and wrong for the other, this was one of those days. However, things turned around for the Norse in the second game. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Luther had the tying run at the plate. Jason Soland then drove the ball over the fence, just foul. Unfortunately, Luther was unable to cross the plate with any more runs.

One player does not make or break the game. Baseball is a team effort and singling out one player's errors is wrong. Even when a player does well, it is attributed to the team. Examples of this would be the pitching performances of Soland and Ryan Niedfeldt. Soland received plenty of support in the 11-1 victory over Buena Vista. The shutout Niefeldt pitched against Concordia can be attributed not only to his pitching, but also to the defense behind him.

As huge Luther College baseball fans, we were very disappointed in how this article portrayed the team. We have attended most games and have seen the effort that the team puts out. To focus on the negative aspects of their game rather than the positives discredits what the team has accomplished.

We hope that future articles will be written with more care and consideration to the team.

Sincerely,
Corey Schneider ('00) and Ann Martens ('01)

St. John's Passion was about more than just the guest soloist

I was disappointed to read the article about the St. John Passion in the April 13 edition of Chips. Although the headline stated "Luther College presents," the writer neglected to mention most of the members of the Luther College community who participated in the performance. In addition to guest soloist Christopher Cock, several members of Luther's voice faculty sang solo roles. The chamber ensemble was made up of 23 student and faculty instrumentalists. In addition to the Nordic Choir, Norsemen (prepared by Tim Peter) and Pike Kor sang under the direction of Sandra Peter. The article also failed to mention the entire production was conducted by Weston Noble.

As the final event of Inauguration weekend, the Passion performance represented an artistic collaboration in celebration of our new president. It's too bad the writer missed the point of the Luther College community in her article.

Sincerely,
Andi Beckendorf
