From under the fedora: The center of fashion
Date 11/18/2004 12:00 AM | Topic: OpinionThe Last Commandments8. Certain things must match. This means the belt must match the shoes, and those should be complementary to the colors of the outfit. This is on par with not wearing socks with sandals, in that it should not be experimented with. The only exception to this is when the belt is functioning as an accessory such as wearing a white or colored belt that complements other major components of the outfit. Contrary to popular fashion rule, the socks do not have to match the shoes or even anything in the outfit, and can even not match each other if you have the fortitude to wear them.
9. Be bold. Anyone can go to the mall and buy the entire outfit off of a mannequin and look fairly fashionable. This is preferable to the sartorial nonsense I see on a daily basis. However, in order to really make a statement and be truly stylish, you must integrate various aspects of different styles into a new, cohesive whole. This takes a little daring and a lot of confidence. Andre 3000 from Outkast is a perfect example of this bold fashion savvy. He can wear things that most people would never think of buying and somehow turn into the coolest outfit in the room. How? By wearing everything and anything with command, cool and confidence. So don't be afraid to put yourself on a limb a little and wear things that are a little edgier. Who Knows? You could just turn out to be the coolest cat in the room.
10. Break the rules. Unlike the actual Ten Commandments, I encourage a little deviant behavior and experimentation. Fashion and style aren't about strict rules and regulations. It's about self-expression, fun and sex appeal. These commandments are meant to be guidelines to help people who may not have a keenly developed fashion sense yet. Everyone can get there, and once you do, then it's all about rockin' what works for you and makes you feel good about the way you look. Once you figure out what those things are, nothing I have to say will matter.
