Cobalt 22

Brett Becker In recent years, the large open-bow runabout market segment has gained momentum. Boatbuilders have been making them bigger and bigger, some of them up to 30 feet long. It must be the availability of cheap gasoline and an abundance of disposable income.
Laptop Battery In response to its customers' and dealers' requests, Cobalt has taken the proven hull design from its flagship 293 cuddy and used it as a foundation for the 292. This is notable for a couple of reasons: Cobalt thought this market was important enough to bring out the 292 midyear. Also, this is Cobalt's second runabout over 25 feet long.
Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.
Thinkpad This runabout offers about as much floor space as a Manhattan studio apartment and all the familiar luxury touches that set Cobalt apart from other manufacturers.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
Microsoft But the first question that leaps to mind is "Why?" Why build a bow rider this big?

Laptop Computers "I think experienced boaters are looking for a little more size for entertaining. They want to share their boat," says Tom Wilson, advertising manager for Cobalt Boats. "Based on the success of our 293 cuddy, it was a fairly easy progression to build the 292."
laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)
Laptop Computer Wilson said Cobalt's research shows that a lot of people who bought a cuddy cabin thinking they would spend nights aboard it are still using it primarily as a day boat. Cobalt's other large bow rider, a 27-footer, has sold well, but customers still wanted more room and deck space. In essence, they were asking for the 292.
"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."
Desktop Computer When you see the 292 tied to the dock, it looks big - and at 29 feet, it is - but it performs on par with much smaller boats. Steering and throttle inputs are transferred to the water quickly and precisely. The test model was equipped with twin MerCruiser 350 Mag MPI engines, Bravo III dual-propeller drives and custom Kiekhafer controls, which made docking and slow-speed maneuvers a snap - just grease it into a slip using only the gear shifters.
Notebooks From a standstill, the 292 comes up on plane quickly with minimal bow rise and no loss of horizon. Once up on plane, driver inputs are nearly instantaneous. Turn-in is immediate and controlled. The 292 leans comfortably into turns, yet it doesn't ventilate the outside drive unit - a difficult achievement with twin drives. Wilson said Cobalt test drivers were surprised at how much better the hull performed as a bow rider. Oddly, those performance and handling gains were somewhat accidental, Wilson says. Because the 292 carries less weight up front, it handles better than its sibling 293 cuddy.
Lenovo Because of its length and hull design, the 292 corners well not only in smooth water, but also in the rough stuff. Making sweeping turns in choppy water yields no pounding and results in a ride that can best be described as "cushy:" smooth, controlled comfort.
Hard Drive But then, Cobalt buyers expect comfort, and there are no disappointments here.
Travelstar Enter from the rear swim platform and walk through the port transom door. Thick snap-in carpeting lines the length and width of the interior. Beneath the carpeting lies a self-bailing, nonskid deck with two storage lockers. The front locker is deep and long enough for skis, and the rear is sized for bulkier objects, such as kneeboards and wakeboards. Despite the boat's size and elegance, it's perfectly suited for water-sports. A heavy stern and adjustable trim tabs and drive units allow the driver to tailor the wakes for tubing and boarding. In the portside locker at the stern, you can find a tool kit, fire extinguisher, fresh-water fill port and an electric inflator to blow up those tow toys.
Gateway More to its purpose, the 292 is ideal for entertaining. Loads of floor space give your guests room to move around. Yet the boat remains stable, with little pitching when walking from side to side. There is honestly enough room to seat 12 adults comfortably - four of them in the bow. A 10-disc CD player with six speakers fills the cockpit and bow with sound, and gunnels are deep enough to make guests who may be unaccustomed to the water feel safe without feeling "boxed in." At 36 mph, the sound meter registered a paltry 79 decibels, making the 292 one of the quietest boats we've tested.
Laptop Parts People expect that kind of luxury and refinement from Cobalt. In fact, the Marine Matrix Boat Ownership Survey of 3,970 owners of 27 different brands of runabouts shows that Cobalt ranks first in all product attributes but one. In that category, Cobalt finished second in exterior styling by a single percentage point, which is kind of baffling when you look at the 292. Its lines are graceful with tasteful gel-coat accent stripes.
Software Inside, the dash is upholstered with form-fitting hand-sewn vinyl. Genuine wood appliques are dipped in urethane for a smooth finish and fitted with aircraft-style stainless-steel switches. Materials used for the seats are unique to Cobalt, right down to the "ostrich-skin" pattern it uses for accent. Seat cushions that aren't removable swing on heavy-gauge aluminum piano-style hinges. Port and starboard helm seats feature flip-up bolsters for increased visibility during docking and other slow speed maneuvers.
Hard Drives Wilson says Cobalt will build at least 50 292s in the 1999 model year. Production numbers for 2000 have not been finalized. The company hopes to lure buyers to the Cobalt brand with the new model but realizes they are still a niche builder.
Electronics "Hopefully, we'll bring in some converts," he says. "Most of the customers will be sold to existing Cobalt owners who want to move up to a bigger boat." - Brett Becker
