Browser Has Gained More Than Two Million Net Users In Past Three MonthsCOLUMBUS, OH, OCTOBER 14, 2004 -- Netscape, a division of America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company, today announced that it had passed the four million download milestone for its most recent browser, Netscape 7.2, less than two months after the launch of the browser on August 17, 2004. In addition, the Company said that Netscape 7.2 is averaging half a million downloads per week.
"The Netscape browser continues to be the leading choice for millions of the world's savviest online users," said Netscape General Manager Jeremy Liew. "Although the browser marketplace is getting more crowded, advanced users are increasingly turning to Netscape for a more innovative, flexible and secure browsing experience. We're very pleased at the terrific response to the Netscape 7.2 browser, and we have even more exciting plans for the browser going forward."
According to Nielsen/Netratings, the Netscape browser in August was the country's second most popular browser, with 4.8 percent of home users and 8.4 percent of the at-work audience, and has gained more than two million net home/work users in the U.S. over the past three months (from 7.6 million users in the May Nielsen/Netratings report to 9.89 million in August).
Unlike some other browsers available today, the Netscape 7.2 browser has:
- Tabbed Browsing that lets users browse faster by allowing them to open more pages at once and switch back and forth between those pages without opening multiple browser windows.
- Integrated instant messaging so users can easily access their AIM Buddy Lists from anywhere in Netscape 7.2, including Navigator, Mail and Composer.
- Integrated e-mail client that allows users to easily access their e-mail, whether Netscape Mail, a different ISP, work account or AOL Mail.
- Popup Controls built into the browser itself, and not as a toolbar add-on, so that users stop popups -- including mouse-over pop-ups -- from taking over their browsing experience.
- Password Manager allowing users to save and control their passwords in the browser and enter them when visiting Web pages.
- Integrated Web search that lets users conduct a search on any word in a web page by simply selecting the word with the mouse, right-clicking and choosing Web Search.
Netscape 7.2 is available for download or can be ordered by CD through the mail at http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/.
