Laptop Battery Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey wants to halt plans for offshore windmill farms until the state has more time to study what effect the structures might have on tourism and surrounding marine life.

Thinkpad New York-based Winergy LLC has proposed five wind farms off the coast of southern New Jersey. The bulk of them would be located in Cape May County, with 921 windmills located six miles off the coast at four sites in Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor and the Wildwoods.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
Microsoft The other wind-farm proposal involves 98 windmills located 3.5 miles off the Monmouth County coast between Long Branch and Manasquan.

Laptop Computers A second company, Atlantic Renewable Energy, wants to build an offshore windmill near Island Beach State Park, north of Barnegat Inlet in Ocean County.

The results of this preliminary study suggest that antioxidant therapy effectively alleviates the symptoms of Meniere s disease in people who have not benefited from medications. Desktop Computer Codey expects to issue a moratorium shortly that would put off the construction of offshore windmills for as long as two years while the state prepares guidelines.
Notebooks "The governor wants to examine all the possible ramifications," Codey spokeswoman Kelley Heck said. "He thinks there could be benefits as well. He wants to take enough time so that we can have an in-depth public process with public hearings."
Lenovo Tim Dillingham, executive director of the American Littoral Society, a coastal conservation group in Sandy Hook, said Codey is right to use caution. There are serious questions, he said, about what the four-story structures would mean for ocean views, fishing operations and the safety of migratory birds and animals.
Hard Drive Birds can fly into the windmills, Dillingham said, and recreational fishing could lose hundreds of square miles of water.
Travelstar "The farm fields displace an enormous amount of ocean area," Dillingham said. "Operators are going to want to exclude people from that area. This ought to be treated with great care. I think the governor is saying, 'Let's stop and think this thing through and not let the developers drive the process,' which is what's happening now."
Gateway Cindy Zipf of Clean Ocean Action, an environmental group based in Sandy Hook, said Codey's announcement is appropriate since current laws and regulations do not anticipate large-scale industrial fields of wind turbines.
Laptop Parts "There's no guidance and no policy," Zipf said. "Good government is based on science and public involvement. We need to find out if the ocean is an appropriate place for these facilities."
Software Other environmental groups, however, staged a news conference urging Codey to support the wind farms as a much-needed alternative energy source.
Hard Drives "The recent oil spill in South Jersey was a dirty, costly lesson for New Jersey that we need better, cleaner ways to produce energy," said Emily Rusch of the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group. "To protect the environment, we need a plan that moves clean energy forward, not a plan that puts a stopper on it."
Electronics Sierra Club New Jersey President Jeff Tittel said the alternative to wind power is "more air pollution from coal plants or more safety risks from nuclear power."
Canon Dillingham called the groups' motives "laudable," but questioned how the addition of wind farms would reduce the use of other energy sources.
Desktop Pc "There's no mechanism to require that polluting sources of energy be taken offline as renewable sources come on," Dillingham said. "If you don't have a legal hook to require polluters to come offline, you're just feeding the grid. There's no one-for-one tradeoff."
Desktop Computers Though no wind farms have been built off the coast of the United States, many proposals are pending. Winergy plans to build 21 wind farms of various sizes from Cape Cod, Mass., to Maryland's Eastern Shore. In New Jersey, the Avalon and Stone Harbor wind farms have the most electricity potential, with a combined generating capacity of 965 megawatts, nearly as much electricity as one of the Salem nuclear power plants.
Think Pad The state Board of Public Utilities doled out $5 million in grants to three wind projects in 2003, including one grant to study the feasibility of offshore win/d power.
Repair That grant went to Atlantic Renewable, the company planning to build offshore windmills in Barnegat Bay.
Data Recovery "We found that initiative to be fatally flawed before it was even conducted," Zipf said. "It was biased at best."
