Flamingo Paradise Is Losing Its Luster

Laptop Battery A thriving population of Caribbean flamingos in Mexico, once on the verge of extinction, is threatened anew by environmental changes that could reverse the gains of recent years. Commercial development and predators along the Yucatn Peninsula have left the flamingo population there with just a small island to use for nesting. But over the last two years, heavy rains have drastically eroded the island and repeatedly wiped out thousands of flamingo eggs.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad The R a Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, a 200-square-mile natural area on the Yucatn, is home to the lone flamingo colony in Mesoamerica. Brought back from a meager 5,000 in the 50's, the flamingo population there has grown to more than 30,000.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Microsoft Though the R a Lagartos estuary area is large, much of it is not available to the flamingos. New hotels and businesses along the coast and the construction of salt plants, which change the salinity of the water, have left the birds with few places to nest.

Laptop Computers Of the few remaining sites, the birds have consistently chosen a small island, Punta Mecoh, or Flamingo Point. It offers an abundance of sand and decomposed shells for building nests. It is also a refuge from predators like jaguars, which in 1993 wiped out the colony's eggs by scaring the flamingos into abandoning the nests that they had built on a nearby spit of land.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computer Now, erosion is causing havoc. Flooding is common, wiping out the nests and forcing the parents, unable to provide enough warmth to the eggs, to flee. Because of the drenching rains last year, the nesting colony of 8,000 each female lays one egg a year lost all but 186 of its eggs. This year, all 6,500 eggs were lost.

Desktop Computer Local scientists are worried that without a good place to nest, the healthy numbers could be in trouble, and they have devised a plan to restore the island.

Notebooks The biosphere park and an environmental group, Kids and Critters, have decided to fortify the island. The team has received support and advice on the project from Dr. Alan Johnson, a flamingo specialist who helped restore a flamingo colony in the 70's in southeastern France by constructing a huge artificial island for them in the Camargue, where the Rhone River meets the Mediterranean.

Lenovo The scientists at Ra Lagartos have proposed a $100,000 project to raise the island's sand level and reinforce its borders. The project could start in October and end by February, but financing remains uncertain.

Hard Drive Dr. Rodrigo Migoya, a biologist with Kids and Critters, said that if the island was restored just a few birds would return the first year but that the full flock would return the next year.

Travelstar "This is their best site," Dr. Felicity Arengo of the Wildlife Conservation Society said. "We're down to only a couple of sites in the R a Lagartos, and this is the most important one."
