More Homes - More Deer

Laptop Battery Lillian Goodwin starts her day with a strong cup of coffee and a loud clap of her hands. The coffee helps her wake up. The clapping helps keep the five to seven hungry deer away from her home and away from her shrubs - temporarily.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad The Mystic Shores resident's home is just yards away from a dense, wooded area that is off-limits to construction and home to many displaced deer. As much as Goodwin tries to chase away the deer by smacking pots and pans or honking a car horn, they have grown accustomed to such antics.

Laptop Computers The Mystic Shores retirement community offers a peek into a much broader, emerging link between deer and the region's bustling construction and development. As wooded areas are cleared for new homes, the animals are pushed into pockets of land, resulting in dense populations of deer sheltered by residential communities.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Desktop Computer In the case of the retirement community, deer, which generally roam in a square-mile area, have been pushed by construction into the large wooded outskirts of the community. This has provided them with protection from hunters and seemingly unlimited access to food - much to residents' chagrin.

Notebooks "I have been here for 13 years, and there have always been deer. But ever since construction has increased on Mathistown (Road), I have seen more and more deer," Mystic Shores resident Geraldine Schuessler said as three deer nibbled some nearby shrubs recently.

Lenovo According to the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, Tuckerton, Little Egg Harbor and Eagleswood townships in Ocean County together average 57 deer per square mile, which is 20 deer more than the state average of 37. Numbers for the previous years could not be obtained, so it is unclear whether the deer population is growing or shrinking.

Hard Drive On the opposite side of the spectrum, Stafford Township, Ocean County, averages 14 deer per square mile, which is attributed to larger, continuous residential areas and fewer pockets of dense woods.

Travelstar The anxiety and frustration the deer cause show in many Mystic Shores residents' back yards, nearly all of which have fences and wires coming up from the ground. The fences might keep deer from eating the plants, but residents say they also take away from the beauty of their lawns.

Gateway "It is getting to the point that I really can't even plant anymore; they eat everything," said Ed Kryston, a Mystic Shores resident. "We have to put up this fencing and it really does not look any good."

Laptop Parts Local garden centers said there are many ways to prevent deer from eating plants, such as spraying the garden with deer repellent and planting flowers that deer do not eat, but they emphasized that fencing and netting are most effective.

Software Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Jack Kaskey noted that many people think construction and development decreases the deer population, but that is rarely the case.

Hard Drives "In the beginning, development scares the deer away, but they often return in greater numbers because houses provide protection from hunters, a steady source of food and often are connected to some wooded areas," Kaskey said.

Electronics Another reason for the higher regional average of deer is developments like Harbourtown Villas, which used to be a hunting area a few miles from Mystic Shores. It now serves as fertile ground for the deer population.

Canon "When we first moved here, hunters were not served notice that the area is off-limits, and it caused quite a stir," Harbourtown Villas resident Debbie Sorrentino said.

Desktop Pc Sorrentino is unlike many of her Mystic Shores neighbors a few miles away. She loves having the deer around - even if they do eat her shrubs.

Desktop Computers "I moved here from Staten Island so I could be closer to deer and other animals," Sorrentino said. "I actually feed them."

Think Pad She said her opinion is shared by many of her neighbors.

Repair "This is a community with a lot of families, and children love the deer. So it is more of a pleasure than anything else," she said.

Data Recovery Several Mystic Shores residents have similar feelings - one going as far as to say, "What do we want to get rid of next? Humans."

Cisco Kaskey said the state Department of Environmental Protection wants to see fewer deer in Little Egg Harbor and surrounding areas, which is why it has been labeled a Deer Management Zone. The designation is for areas that have larger than normal deer population numbers.

Keyboard "We allow more hunting days in these areas and we are generally more liberal with our hunting laws, which we hope will lower the number," Kaskey said.

Monitor According to the 2003 Fish and Wildlife Digest, hunters, including bow and firearm hunters, killed 321 deer in the region in 2002-03. The year's harvest - a term for the number of deer killed - ranks in the bottom third in the state.

Desktop The Division of Fish and Wildlife has organized the state into 67 zones, each with unique deer populations and separate hunting rules and regulations. Tuckerton, Little Egg Harbor and Eaglewood townships and the surrounding region fall into zone 22.

Infosys Large deer populations not only pose a danger to the gardening hobby, they might pose a danger to health.

Refurbished Laptops Lt. Wayne Shelton, of the State Police's Bass River Parkway Station, said this time of year - the autumn rut, or mating season - produces more deer-related accidents than any other.

Wipro "There are already tons of deer in this area and they are in heat this time of year, which makes them excitable and dangerous to drivers," Shelton said.

Lap Top Shelton said his department saw 15 accidents in October, four of which were deer-related.

Refurbished Little Egg Harbor Mayor Brian Rumpf said the deer population does not come up when officials talk about development, adding that it is just an annoyance that must take its natural course.

Memory "We know people have problems with the deer, but there is really little we can do," Rumpf said.

Intel In the foreseeable future, Mystic Shore residents, along with other residents of the region, will continue to rattle their pans, honk their horns and secure their gardens from those pesky, adorable deer.

As400 "I love the deer, but I don't like them eating my plants and shrubs," Kryston said. "What am I going to do, shoot them? No."
