Laptop Battery Google Inc.'s Gmail came under fresh fire Monday when an international privacy rights group said the soon-to-be-launched free e-mail service violated privacy laws in Europe and elsewhere.
The new version of Google Desktop includes a potentially useful new feature that lets you search across your computers for files. So if you have a file on one PC, you should be able to find that file from a different one, even if you ™e halfway across the world. In theory, it sounds great. In practice, so. First, there are privacy implications, because a partial index of your files lives on Google servers as a kind of way station. While there are plenty of protections against privacy invasions, and the index that is on the server is only a very small slice of your files, you still may not like the idea of any of your index being on a Google server for any amount of time.
Thinkpad Privacy International, which has offices in the U.S. and Europe, said it had filed complaints with privacy and data-protection regulators in 17 countries in Europe, as well as in Canada and Australia. It had already filed an initial complaint in Britain.

Google Desktop gives you easy access to information on your computer and from the web. It's a desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, music, photos, chats and web pages that you've viewed. By making your computer searchable, Google Desktop puts your information easily within your reach and frees you from having to manually organize your files, emails and bookmarks. It makes searching your computer as easy as searching the web with Google.
Laptop Computers The world's most popular Internet search engine said this month that it would soon start offering Gmail with 1 gigabyte of free storage capacity more than 100 times that offered by established rivals Yahoo Mail and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN Hotmail.
PCs left over after an upgrade often do an admirable job as file servers. You just need to know what components are important, what parts you can do without, and how to adjust Windows so other computers on the network can access the file server. The following steps will tell you how to create a file server using an old computer with Windows XP installed, although with a little tweaking most of the following tips apply to a computer using any version of Windows...
Laptop Computer Google said Gmail, which is still in its test phase, complied with data-protection laws worldwide.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the simplest way to transfer web page files from your computer to the Charter web server for anyone to view.
Desktop Computer The user terms, however, sparked controversy among consumer advocacy groups and some Internet users because Google said its computers would scan e-mails for keywords to use in sending Gmail users targeted advertisements. It would also keep copies of e-mails even after consumers had deleted them.
Notebooks Privacy International said these and other terms breached European privacy laws, which are stricter than U.S. laws.
Lenovo European law says that data should not be stored longer than necessary, and scanning e-mails is allowed only under certain limited conditions.
Hard Drive "Google actively solicits user feedback on our privacy policies if they can be made clearer or otherwise improved, we want to hear about it," the Mountain View, Calif.-based company said in a statement. "We look forward to a detailed dialogue with data protection authorities across Europe to ensure their concerns are heard and resolved."
Travelstar An initial British complaint from Privacy International about Gmail was struck down this month by Britain's Information Commissioner's Office, partly because the service has not yet been launched commercially. An ICO spokeswoman said that under EU law, an Internet service was considered lawful as long as it explicitly spelled out how the user's information would be handled in the terms of service.
Gateway "As long as Google is clear and transparent, there is no data protection issue," she said.
