Hard Drive In some cases, the technology can pinpoint the malfunction, said John Stokes, an assistant director at the commission. With either a prerecorded voice or a code, the septic system would call the manufacturer to say that a pipe is backed up or a pump stopped working.
Travelstar "In all likelihood, the homeowner would be alerted, too," Stokes said.
Gateway The new Pinelands septic systems also would be programmed to call periodically so that the manufacturer knows it has not been illegally disconnected.
Laptop Parts The calling feature is just one of many new proposals contained in the final report of a Pinelands Commission subcommittee that has been studying alternative septic systems since March 2000.
Software Alternative septic systems are required in the Pinelands on small lots, those between 1 and 3.2 acres, because they are supposed to do a better job of removing nitrates from wastewater than traditional systems.
Hard Drives One of the things that makes the Pinelands special is the region's nutrient-poor soil and water, and the alternative systems are aimed at protecting the plants and animals that thrive in those unique conditions.
Electronics However, commission scientists discovered in the 1990s that the two alternative systems previously authorized (pressure-dose and RUCK systems) were releasing unacceptably high nitrate levels. About 1,800 homes currently use these poorly performing systems, said Larry Liggett, the commission's manager of planning.
Canon So, after nearly 20 months of study, the commission is preparing to authorize five new alternative septic systems that reduce wastewater pollution by converting nitrogen solids to nitrogen gas.
Desktop Pc This time around, the commission plans to conduct extensive testing on newly installed systems to make sure they work, and to examine how often they break down.
Desktop Computers The commission could formally propose rules creating a 5-year pilot program for the new systems as soon as its next meeting, Friday, Dec. 14, Stokes said. The rules would not require existing systems to be upgraded.
Think Pad Prior to then, the commission plans to hold a public forum on the subject. The meeting begins at 6:30 tonight at the Southampton Township Municipal Building, Route 206 and Retreat Road in Burlington County.
Repair The commission already has received a $240,000 grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection to get the pilot program started. The money would pay to hire a full-time sewage coordinator who would oversee the program and to pay for such expenses as effluent testing, Stokes said.
Data Recovery The new systems - Amphidrome, Bioclere, Cromaglass, FAST, and Ashco RFS III - could be nearly double the cost of a standard $6,000 to $9,000 septic system, he said.
