Laptop Battery You can feel autumn in the air this week. I'd like to talk about what astronomical wonders this season should hold for us, starting with our current week. Our topics include Mars, three other planets, three meteor showers, a famous comet and a total eclipse of the moon.
Astrologers have always gotten riled up about eclipses. "During a lunar eclipse the light of the Full Moon is temporarily hidden to our view, awareness, defense systems, and over sensitizing our emotional reactions the effects of a Lunar Eclipse usually last for about 6 months or until the next Lunar Eclipse."
Thinkpad It's been a month since Mars was the featured topic in this column. The planet made its closest approach to us in recorded history back in late August. Crowds as large as 3,000 people turned out at places in New Jersey to view the Red Planet in telescopes.
The tips that follow will show you how to photograph the moon under normal circumstances, or under eclipse conditions. We'll start with how to photograph the full moon itself, and then give you specific tips for photographing a lunar eclipse. By the way, if the weather doesn't cooperate, there will be another total lunar eclipse visible on February 21, 2008. Photographing the Full Moon.
Microsoft But Mars is still a spectacular sight and will remain good through all of autumn. For one more week - our current one - Mars will look brighter and bigger than it will at any time until the year 2018.

Laptop Computers Look southeast at nightfall to see its orange-gold light outshining all other points of light.
Autumn Festival celebrations date back to more than 2, 000 years ago. In feudal times, Chinese emperors prayed to Heaven for a prosperous year. They chose the morning of the 15th day of the second lunar month to worship the sun and the night of the 15th day of the eighth lunar month to hold a ceremony in praise of the moon. In the western district of Beijing is the Yuetan Park, which originally was the Temple of Moon, and every year the emperor would go there to offer a sacrifice to the moon.
Laptop Computer On Sunday evening, Mars will shine to the left of the moon, and then the next evening to the right of the moon. Telescopic observers will be pleased to hear that no major dust storms have yet broken out to obscure features on the face of Mars.
> Space Maps View Previous Product View Next Product The Earth's Moon Map View Larger The Earth's Moon Map National Geographic's "The Earth's Moon" is like having an atlas and almanac in one. poster shows a detailed image of both sides of the Moon, with an index of hundreds of lunar features. In addition to showing landing spots for lunar missions, the map includes graphics and descriptions of the moon's phases, its revolution in relation to the Earth and Sun, eclipses, and how the moon affects tides on Earth. There is no better resource that combines imagery and information for the moon.
Desktop Computer All of us can ponder with interest two Martian events that occurred yesterday. One was the start of summer in the southern hemisphere of Mars, the hemisphere that is tilted toward us.
Notebooks In good telescopes, you can see the Martian south polar ice-cap breaking up and melting away. The other Mars event yesterday was the planet resuming its usual eastward motion against the background of stars. This indicates that Earth is starting to leave the slower planet behind.
Lenovo During the summer, all the other bright planets seemed to exit the stage of the sky (they appeared too near the Sun to see) and left Mars alone to give its virtuoso performance.
Hard Drive But as fall advances, the other bright planets start coming back into view. Venus will slowly get higher in the southwest after sunset. Jupiter will remain an object for dawn viewers for a few more months. But Saturn will keep coming up earlier in the night and start rising before midnight by the end of October.
Travelstar Each autumn brings with it on certain nights the thrill of meteor showers - increased numbers of "shooting stars." This year, the Orionid meteors of October, Leonid meteors of November, and Geminid meteors of December all peak when moonlight is somewhat bright.
Gateway But they will still be worth looking for. So will the most important "short-period" comet after Halley's: This fall, Encke's Comet may become visible to the unaided eye in a rare rather close approach.
Laptop Parts There is one astronomical event this fall, however, which should be the most impressive of all. I am talking about the Nov. 8 total eclipse of the moon. It will be relatively brief but it should be unusually colorful. And it occurs not only early in the evening, but on a Saturday, too.
