County To Round Up And Gas Canada Geese

Laptop Battery Thousands of resident Canada geese that have been fouling Union County's public parks and golf courses with their unhealthy and unsightly droppings will be destroyed this week, officials said.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad The county is moving into this drastic stage of its geese management efforts only after years of "exhaustive" alternative methods of controlling the burgeoning population of the nonmigratory birds failed, said Charles Sigmund, the county's parks and recreation director.

Microsoft "We have tried everything from border collies to chemical spraying and motorized motor boats to deter the geese population, and yet the health threat caused by the birds and the complaints from the public about the mess caused by the droppings have continued to increase," Sigmund said.

Over the past 30 to 40 years, Canada geese have learned that food is so readily available in places like the Forsythe refuge that they don't move out during the winter months, Atzert said. called resident Canada geese make a steady diet of the refuge's lush, green grasses. But in the early part of the fall, when the muddy banks of the marsh should be overgrown with vegetation, the geese have already eaten away large patches of grass. Other birds, like migratory Canada geese, have little food to rebuild their fat stores, Atzert said.

Laptop Computers Under a $20,000 contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fish and Wildlife Services, about 2,700 adult birds at seven parks and recreation locations will be rounded up during a three-day period by federal workers and county park staff.

If Canada geese simply were a nuisance, killing them might seem a bit much. growing number of geese in New Jersey pose health risks, which is why the U.S. Division of Fish and Wildlife Service's decision to increase the number of geese to be rounded up and killed is a sound one.

Laptop Computer The collections will be conducted early in the morning, with the birds being placed in trucks and suffocated on site with carbon dioxide gas, according to Sigmund.

There has been a huge population boom of Canada geese in the last 10 years, according to Atzert. In 1990, there were 238, 13 states from Virginia to Maine. The most recent count puts the Canada goose population at more than one million. New Jersey has roughly 85, 000 resident Canada geese. half, Coppen said.

Desktop Computer The carcasses will then be shipped to a landfill and buried.

Notebooks The process of using carbon dioxide to asphyxiate the geese is conducted, according to the federal wildlife services, "in a manner that is professional, humane and legal."

Lenovo John Hadidian, director of the Urban/Suburban Wildlife Protection Program at The Humane Society of the United States, strongly disagrees.

Hard Drive "We don't approve of its use in this situation. We have described this (use of carbon dioxide) as mass killing" he said.

Travelstar Hadidian said large number of birds are placed in a device on the back of a small pickup truck and gassed.

Gateway "There will be no room for them to move around, so they will be flapping their wings and the air will not circulate evenly. This procedure is killing, it's not euthanasia," he said.

Laptop Parts "When you are going to provide a humane death for an animal, you have to treat that animal as an individual and not as a group and under conditions that will minimize the amount of stress and distress that the animal experiences," Hadidian said.

Software Eric Stiles, vice president of conservation for the New Jersey Audubon Society, said, "We don't advocate the spraying of chemicals, or lethal methods for controlling the geese population. There is a wide range of options other than lethal control.

Hard Drives "It is our position that resident Canada geese are a bio-indicator of poor land use planning and land use management. The vast majority of these geese are simply associated with too much lawn mowing," he said.

Electronics "We have inherited this idea of the English-type lawn being the ideal prototype. We need a self-help group for learning to stop mowing," Stiles said.

Canon He said "nine times out of 10, the real permanent solution would be to restore these large mowed areas to their native habitat. Mowed lawns are a biological ground zero," said Stiles.

Desktop Pc State experts said there are 96,800 geese who live year-round throughout the state. The 11- to 12-pound adult birds can defecate as much as 27 times a day, producing a pound of waste per goose per day.

Desktop Computers Sigmund said the county has tried everything, including modifying the environment to making it less attractive to the geese, and in the spring embarked on a program to locate the birds' nesting areas so they could treat the eggs they found with a special oil so they would not hatch.

Think Pad "Despite this, we still noticed goslings this summer, so obviously we could never locate every nest and reduce the population by 100 percent," he said.

Repair Sigmund said the county is trying to address the issue as humanely as possible considering the large number of birds involved.

Data Recovery Hanover Township conducted a similar program last year, asphyxiating dozens of geese that had infested its sewage plant.

Cisco State Wildlife Services has issued 37 permits so far this year authorizing people, organizations, government agencies and corporations who want to reduce the local goose populations and 37 more are pending.

Keyboard Collectively, the permits allow the culling of a total of 11,000 Canada geese statewide, according to state authorities.
