The SOBER-P worm variant, also labeled in different parts of the world as SOBER-S or SOBER-N, was first reported May 2, 2005. The worm entices the recipient to open an email attachment in a .zip archive format by offering tickets to the soccer World Cup in Germany. Once the SOBER-P message is opened, the worm "harvests" all the email addresses on a PC and then sends itself to all the contacts, usually in large groups of names. The result is a rapid spike in inbound and outbound traffic that often cripples a company's email infrastructure.
The worm has the potential to wipe out user data and significantly compromise corporate servers, warn the antispyware security experts at Acronis. The company's security team recommends that users have not only a current backup image of their hard disk, date antispyware and antivirus software. According to published reports, the worm could have subject lines that read "the best videoclip ever", "give me a kiss", or "school girl fantasies gone bad". The worm is expected to be embedded in an attachment sent with the email message.

"This type of threat is particularly troubling because while companies can take measures to protect their users' PCs from becoming infected with the worm, they are largely helpless when it comes to stopping the rapid rise in emails targeting their infrastructure from other companies that have been infected," stated Michael Wilczak, Senior Vice President at Infocrossing. "The SOBER-P worm is just the latest example of why companies are turning to boundary email scanning services such as MailWatch, which blocks unwanted emails at the Internet gateway -- before they reach the clients' network and have the opportunity to disrupt their business, Mr. Wilczak continued."

"The value of MailWatch is that harmful messages are blocked outside of the clients' infrastructure -- before they can disrupt the clients' business. We've designed our infrastructure to be redundant, scalable on-demand and self-healing, so we absorb the impact -- not the client. When the threat peaked, we were processing nearly three times the amount of traffic compared with a normal business day. Yet SOBER-P was virtually transparent to our clients while their valid, business-critical communications continued to flow unimpeded," Wilczak concluded.
