According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

attention spread even farther when it was reported that the

Desktop Computer Finally, add the issue of race, and the potentially dangerous
creature that is the mainstream media pounced. These are all
reasons the Duke lacrosse team and the alleged rape that took place
at a party on March 13 have garnered the national spotlight.
Notebooks The impact of this story is being felt across the nation by
parents, children and average
people of different races and
classes. The coverage the MSM is providing is going to affect
their opinions.
Lenovo Media coverage was favorable toward the victim before the DNA
results failed to implicate any of the players. Several stories
provided shocking details of the attack, presenting only the
victim's side. Based on the media reports to that point, most of
the public had probably convicted the players.
Hard Drive Early on, none of the Duke players or their lawyers said
anything, despite reporters' countless requests.
Travelstar After the defense lawyers saw the "no comment" line wasn't
playing in the media, they changed tactics and flat out accused the
prosecution of using the media to convict their clients without a
trial.
Gateway "Team's silence is sickening," was the headline over a column in
the Raleigh News & Observer, portraying the author's disgust
with the team protecting each other.
Laptop Parts "I can see the team going down this path, justifying its
silence," wrote Ruth Sheehan, a staff writer. "And it makes me
sick.
Software "Because, of all the occupational hazards that must come with
stripping, one of them should not be rape. And no, forced sex by a
hunky prep student doesn't make it better."
Hard Drives These stories and others spawned student protests against rape
and against how the case was being handled and drew attention from
national women's right groups as well as the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People. Several stories reported
about tension over race and social status in a traditionally black
town that houses a private, exclusive, predominantly white
university.
Electronics The public assumes the players are guilty because of the poor
media coverage. However, the media can change their coverage at the
drop of a hat, and they did.
Canon The media suddenly turned when the DNA results came back
negative. Stories began to quote lawyers saying it was going to be
difficult for the prosecutor to convict the players without DNA
evidence. The legal experts were saying, as if it was a foregone
conclusion, that it would now be easy for any defense lawyer to
create reasonable doubt.
Desktop Pc Most recently, stories circulated using transcripts from police
radios that describe the woman as "passed-out drunk."
Desktop Computers Keep in mind all of these stories were being written without any
charges being filed or any arrests being made. I'm sure all the
stories mentioned that and used the word "alleged" when describing
the rape, an old journalism tactic to protect the media outlet from
being sued. But do you think the average reader takes that in to
account?
Think Pad As a result of the media focusing on details from the defense
attorneys "proving" their clients' innocence, the public began to
doubt the woman's story.
Repair Even the News & Observer's public editor said the paper's
coverage is struggling to straddle the thin fairness line on such a
touchy subject.
Data Recovery This phenomenon is not limited to rape stories. Consider what
happened to Richard Jewell after the bombing at the 1996 Olympic
Games in Atlanta. First, he was painted as hero for attempting to
save lives, but after it was reported that he was a suspect, the
media's attitude changed. Jewell claimed that, after "88 days of
hell" from media and investigators' scrutiny, his name was ruined.
Jewell was never charged.
Cisco Journalists should meet higher standards in cases like these. Of
course, issues such as rape should receive media attention, but it
should be as accurate and fair as possible. Journalists' ears perk
up when words like rape, race and
money are used, but that doesn't
mean their ethics should go out the window.
Keyboard Because so many people are affected by what is written about
cases like this one, journalists need to make sure they do one
simple thing: Don't be sensational. Stories that are accurate and
not sensational better educate the public.
