and eleuthero (Siberian ginseng) enhancing properties, which may play a role in preventing infection with the influenza virus. However, they have not yet been specifically studied for this purpose. administration of 100 mg of Asian ginseng extract with a flu vaccine led to a lower frequency of colds and flu compared to people who just received the flu vaccine alone.13
Thinkpad Nashville (Tenn.)-Vanderbilt University Medical Center is
enrolling volunteers in a study to test a new vaccine that targets
avian flu, the first such vaccine against the virus. The Vanderbilt
trial, led by Kathryn Edwards, M.D., will test the new vaccine in
nearly 100 individuals 65 years of age and over. It is the second
phase of a national study led by the National Institute of Allergy
and Infectious Diseases.
Once infection has occurred, the goal of flu therapy is to stop the virus before it replicates enough to cause illness. Flu vaccines, which contain dead or inactivated flu viruses, help people ward off illness by enabling their bodies to recognize and fight a specific strain of flu virus early in the infection process. Every year, doctors try to determine which variety of the flu is likely to cause an outbreak, then vaccines against that particular strain are manufactured. risk populations, especially the elderly (Cox RJ et al 2004; Glezen WP 2004; Kilbourne ED 2004; Langley JM et al 2004; Munoz FM 2003; Nicholson KG et al 2003; Pfleiderer M et al 2001; Sandhu SK et al 2001; Wareing MD et al 2002). Additionally, animal studies suggest that supplementing with (DHEA) may restore the aging immune system sufficiently to allow normal response to the vaccine (Daynes RA et al 1994).
Microsoft The first phase of the avian flu vaccine trial, conducted at
various other medical centers around the country, tested the
vaccine in normal, healthy adults and determined it was safe to
test in other populations.
This is the first case of a flock of German farm poultry contracting bird flu, the wire service reports, although several cases of the virus were found in wild birds in Germany this year. Health officials remain alert to the possibility that the avian flu virus could mutate and cause it to be transmitted from human to human. Although the World Health Organization puts the number of human deaths from avian flu at 190, none of them is ascribed to contagion between humans, the AP reports.
Laptop Computers The
development of a widespread
epidemic of avian influenza, or "bird flu," is of growing
concern throughout the world.
Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.
Laptop Computer Human cases, with a high fatality rate, have been reported in
Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. Public
health experts fear that avian
flu could lead to a worldwide pandemic if the virus becomes
easily transmittable, leading to a public
health crisis.
- Robert Preidt SATURDAY, Feb. 3 (HealthDay News) - Pumping iron may pump up your response to a flu shot, British research suggests. building session before a flu shot can enhance the immune system's response to the vaccine. However, men and women had different responses. In the study, the students either rested quietly or did upper arm exercises for about 25 minutes. Six hours later, all the students received a flu shot.
Desktop Computer Currently, most people are highly vulnerable to infection from
avian influenza, as the current influenza vaccines do not protect
against this new strain of the virus, making the development of new
vaccines against avian flu a major priority.
Notebooks "We believe in some cases in Asia that the avian flu has been
passed from human to human, and we're concerned that the virus will
evolve to spread easily among the human population and become a
global pandemic," said Edwards, professor of Pediatric Infectious
Diseases and vice chair of clinical research in the Department of
Pediatrics.
Lenovo "Developing an effective vaccine is our best defense. The
elderly, in particular, could be at high risk for complications and
death from infection, so it is very important to test the new
vaccine in older adults."
Hard Drive Avian flu first emerged in Hong Kong in 1997 and has spread
among poultry populations in some Asian countries. Humans have
contracted the virus from sick animals, and evidence has pointed to
a small number of cases in which human-to-human transmission is
believed to have occurred. Identified as H5N1, the strain of the
influenza virus has shown a high mortality rate-approximately 72
percent-with many fatalities among previously healthy young
people.

Gateway "It's similar to the concept of the regular flu vaccine that
people get every year, but it's targeted to this novel type of
flu," Edwards said.
Laptop Parts Because the study is beginning at the start of this year's
influenza season, all participants will be given this year's
licensed influenza vaccine if desired. Participants will then be
given three doses of either the bird flu or placebo vaccine over
the next six months and will be required to provide blood samples
to test if protection against the virus was produced.
Software People 65 years or older who are interested in hearing more
about the avian flu vaccine study, may call the Avian Influenza
Hotline at 615-322-8740.
