Microsoft Mayor Mary Mazza Duffy said the cleanup is an expensive proposition and one that won't be finished overnight.

Laptop Computers Duffy said the cost of the cleanup is estimated at about $1 per tire. And with more than a million old tires projected to be there, she said that's a price the township simply cannot afford.

He said it costs him $2 per tire to get rid of them. Also, a whole truckload of shingles showed up on a property his son purchased on Monroe Avenue in the DeCarlo tract. Harris said mattresses, furniture and other debris are frequently dumped along the roads and the situation is becoming worse. Committeeman Elmer Bowman said that when traced, much of the construction debris comes from out of the township, though some of it comes from homeowners who do their own improvements and don't want to pay the tipping fees to get rid of the debris.

Notebooks Duffy said the township foreclosed on the property and inherited the tires in 1982 after the original owner stopped paying taxes. The next year, a giant fire at the site raged for days as an estimated 1 million tires were seared.
Lenovo The township sold the tract several years later to a township resident. But the sale was nullified by a state court after the township failed to disclose the existence of the tires on the site.
Hard Drive Ken Atkinson, the Gloucester County solid waste recycling coordinator, said the county is assisting the township by having accepted more than 6,000 tires through its tire amnesty program. And he expects to be able to accept a few thousand more tires from Monroe with leftover funds from the program.
Travelstar The county grinds the old tires into small chips, which are used in road asphalt projects and as a liner in the county landfill.
Gateway Atkinson said ridding the county of tire heaps is important in curbing the spread of the West Nile virus. The tires retain water and serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Laptop Parts Atkinson said his office is trying to arrange a meeting with DEP officials in hopes of obtaining a tire remediation matching grant for Monroe.
Software But Jim O'Donnell, chairman of the Monroe Democrat Executive Committee, has criticized the Duffy administration for not acting on the tire heap sooner.
Hard Drives "My biggest problem is that they laid on this situation when West Nile became a serious health problem about two years ago," said O'Donnell, a political enemy of Duffy who also serves as special projects coordinator for the county' s recycling office. "This is a dangerous situation."
Electronics Duffy said her administration is addressing the situation, something several previous administrations chose to ignore.
Canon "This won't happen overnight, especially with the amount of tires there," Duffy said. "But we're slowly making progress."
