Rockies' Early Snow Bodes Well For Summer

Laptop Battery Long lines formed at the chair lifts. Blankets of fresh snow covered the slopes. And the hillside echoed with the traditional mating call of a familiar mountain species, the red-booted North American ski bum: "Pow-DER! Pow-DER!" In short, there were classic mid-winter scenes in recent days at Copper Mountain and other ski areas across the Rocky Mountain West. But this year, that scenario is playing out many weeks earlier than usual, thanks to the biggest autumn snowfall anyone can remember.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Thinkpad The premature powder dump is good news for skiers and snowboarders, and even better news for the resorts that sell them lift tickets at prices stretching past $60 per day. But the snows of autumn may have much broader implications, suggesting that the severe drought and forest fires that plagued the region last summer may not be repeated in 2003.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Microsoft "Snow in the winter has a lot to do with forest conditions the next summer," explains Lynn Young of the Denver regional office of the U.S. Forest Service. "If we have enough snow in the winter to build up our moisture levels, that will mean significantly less fire danger than we had this year.

Laptop Computers "So getting this much snow this early is definitely a good sign," Young said. "But a couple of good storms won't be enough. We need to keep getting that precipitation, through the winter and next spring, to start getting our [forest] moisture levels and reservoirs back to normal."

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Laptop Computer A snow-covered hillside is nature's water tank. The moisture that falls in powder form from October through April is absorbed by trees and soil, and then runs off in the spring thaw to fill lakes, rivers and reservoirs. Winter snow is the main source of moisture for the arid lands west of the 100th meridian, where rainfall totals less than 20 inches per year. In contrast, the Eastern Seaboard gets about 40 inches annually.

You can find snow on the ground somewhere almost any time of the year, and Frommer's Winter Sports newsletter will help you track down both the best powder and the best activities. montly email (once a month in spring and summer) includes Rockies Report, an update on what's happening in the US and Canada's most active range, in addition to slope profiles, international snow reports and links to the best deals and promotions.

Desktop Computer The Rocky Mountains' horrendous summer of 2002 began with a serious shortage of snow the previous fall and winter. As measured by spring snowpack, the snowfall last winter was 52 percent of the average, the lowest total recorded in two decades or more.

Notebooks That made for a money-losing season in the ski industry, and for flammable forests and empty irrigation ditches all summer. "Our guys measure the moisture content of trees and ground cover in the forest," said Young. "Last spring, some forest trees had less moisture than kiln-dried timber at the lumberyard."

Lenovo But this autumn, snowfall has been considerably greater than average in much of the West, according to the authoritative "Snotel" surveys of the federal Water and Climate Center in Portland, Ore.

Hard Drive The surveys show snowfall since Oct. 1 at well above average levels in Alaska, Colorado, New Mexico, much of California and much of Nevada. Here at Copper Mountain, for example, on the continental divide, about 60 miles west of Denver, this autumn's snowfall is 146 percent of normal levels.

Travelstar Idaho, Montana and Oregon have had less than average snowfall this fall. Utah and Washington state have had roughly average snowfall -- but still considerably more precipitation than last year.

Gateway While this year's snowfall has caused elation at higher elevations, it has also prompted official concern that residents of the parched West will take the new snow as a signal to relax water-use restrictions.

Laptop Parts "We're not out of the woods yet just because we got some snow," Denver Mayor Wellington Webb warned earlier this month as he announced a series of tough new proposals to cut residential water use.

Software With its reservoirs at 48 percent of capacity -- about half the normal level for this time of year -- Denver this fall banned lawn watering, a draconian step in a city dotted with emerald-green yards, parks and golf courses. It's illegal here to wash a car with a hose; a bucket of water is the limit, even if the family car happens to be a stretch limousine.

Hard Drives In his latest statement, Webb proposed landscape rules restricting the amount of lawn around new homes and requiring the use of soils that hold what little rain falls in the summer.

Electronics If the drought continues into next year, several western cities may impose an outright ban on thirsty blue-grass lawns, pushing homeowners to switch to "xeriscape" yards of cactuses and desert grasses.

Canon Instead of just talking about the dry weather, Colorado officials are trying to do something about it. This winter, the Denver Water Board and other state agencies plan to spend a record $700,000 on cloud-seeding operations, an effort to produce more snow than nature could provide on its own.

Desktop Pc So far this fall, however, nature has done just fine -- to the delight of the ski resorts. "I've been here 30 seasons, and I don't remember better snow before Thanksgiving," said Jim Spence, Copper Mountain's vice president for operations. "This is like a football team scoring 45 points in the first quarter."

Desktop Computers As of Nov. 15, Copper Mountain had recorded 68 inches of natural snowfall this year. On the same day one year ago, the resort's total accumulation was an anemic nine inches. The average snowfall by Thanksgiving is about 48 inches, Spence said.

Think Pad November has produced so much snow in the Rockies, in fact, that the U.S. Ski Team had to cancel its practices at Colorado's Loveland Ski Area.

Repair The racers are perhaps the only skiers who prefer hard, icy slopes to fresh powder. "This is great for recreational skiers, but it's no good for us," said men's head coach Phil McNichol.

Data Recovery With the big snow, most Colorado ski areas opened ahead of schedule this fall. In Utah's Cottonwood Canyon, site of the Winter Olympics this year, the major resorts opened for the season this weekend with about twice as much snow as they had on opening day a year ago.

Cisco Whether or not this year's snow eventually brings more moisture to fields and forests next year, it has already brought joy to the hearts of dedicated winter sports buffs across the West.

Keyboard "Man, this is sooooo not like last year," said an exuberant Joe Vallone, 27, who was schussing effortlessly through a pocket of hip-deep snow on an expert run here the other day. "I mean, we got 35 inches in two days last week! I mean, pow-DER!"
