Microsoft Moves in on Blackberry Market with Push E-mail Service

Blackberry devices are an increasingly common sight on trains, planes and other places whereby business people are on the move. The handheld wireless Blackberry device provides telephone, push email, web browsing and other information services. BT claims that its new service is the first that does not require additional IT server software and support. Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) does not need to be linked to a company email address, and can instead collate various user web email accounts.

Microsoft said that existing Windows Mobile 5.0devicescan geta free software upgrade known as the Messaging and Security Feature Pack in order to use Microsoft Direct Push. Blackberryhas Windows Mobile 5.0 devices for customers with Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2 servers. Microsoft has not said whether it will offer a free patch to Blackberry mobile device users or not. Typically, Microsoft has not been too cooperative in giving competitors equal footing.

Desktop Computer A spokesperson for Microsoft said that Cingular will have Direct Push tariff plans that are expected to be activated some during the current quarter.

Notebooks Another wireless carrier in Europe, T-Mobile, is said to already have a fully operational hosted Exchange service in the Netherlands.

Lenovo Cingular said today that their 2125 and 8125 smartphones would get free upgrades to the new Push service. Device manufacturers Palm and its Treo 700w and i-Mate also committed to releasing free upgrades.

Hard Drive Equipment makers HP, HTC, ASUS, Gigabyte and Fujitsu all announced new Pocket PCs which will be Direct Push capable.

Travelstar Shares of RIMM were down $1.58, or 2.25 percent, at $68.49 at 3:45pm EST Monday. Shares of Microsoft were down 27 cents, or 1 percent, at $26.42. EU demands that the US halt tax subsidies following a WTO ruling today affected Microsoft's stock price.
