State of the Handheld Industry: Dev. Roundtable

Laptop Battery With handheld technology rapidly developing with ATI's Imageon 3D accelerator for mobile phones and other similar 3D technologies, do you think 2D games are the past of handheld gaming or is there still going to be 2D games in few years down the road?

Mike Merren of Climax:
It will take a while, but I believe 2D games will be a thing of the past. We still have a number of generations of phones and Interactive TV to go though before that happens, so there is still a good few years left yet.

The reason why handheld gaming appeals to me is that its the closest to the root of videogames.

-Martijn Wenting

James Daniels of Apex Designs:
I expect we'll see a fairly rapid phasing out of 3D games, much like we did when 3D chipsets took off on the PC. There will still be the occasional 2D title but I expect almost all handheld titles will be 3D within next few years.

Karthik Bala of Vicarious Visions:
Every few years people proclaim 2D games are dead. They'll probably never die. We've already seen 2D games with 3D graphics. ;) It's a style of gameplay that won't go away. From a graphics standpoint, it's amazing to see 3D accelerators on mobile devices. But they do come at a cost - both in price and performance (battery life). More than likely we'll see two classes of hardware succeed- those really good at 2D and those really good at 3D. :)

Mat Hopwood of Pocketeers:
I think that 2D games; in terms of graphical engines will eventually become a rarity, but 2D game play will remain.

Tom Crago of Tantalus:
I think there will be 2D games for a few years yet, certainly in the wireless space. As guess at some point, though, yes, 2D will be limited to a handful of titles a year.

Pierre Dumas of Magic Pockets:
Whenever it is possible, people go for 3D. Check home consoles. Time will tell how long it takes.

Vince Valenti of JV Games:
While 2D games will never disappear, the shear amount of them as seen on the GBA will diminish, just like they did on the big systems. Most gamers are starting to expect much more from portable gaming. We believe it is inevitable that more portable games will include 3D elements.

Martijn Wenting of Karma Studios:
I sure hope so. The reason why handheld gaming appeals to me is that its the closest to the root of videogames. The good thing about GBA is that there are a lot of nice 2D games coming out (and admiringly, even more crappy 2D games). Hopefully we'll see a future with 2D and 3D games side-by-side. Maybe this is a bit naive, but from a gamers point of view I surely hope so.
