National ISP Reduces Spam Costs Dramatically by Adding TurnTide
ASR to Filtering Software
PHILADELPHIA--(
BUSINESS WIRE)--April 13, 2004--TurnTide(TM), the
inventor of the world's first anti-spam router, today announced
that Athenet Data Exchange, a national independent Internet Service
Provider (ISP), has successfully deployed TurnTide ASR-SP series
for two months and the cost savings have been significant. Athenet
invested $80,000 on filtering technology in 2003 and, based on the
continued increase in spam volume, had budgeted for an increase in
spend of another $80,000 in 2004. In the week after it was
deployed, TurnTide ASR lowered Athenet's overall email volume to
one quarter of what it had been, resulting in the elimination of
those expenses. Athenet has recognized an additional benefit in
that there has been a decrease in spam reaching end users because
TurnTide ASR has helped their filters work even better by
lightening the overall load.
"We had invested significantly in filters and they are extremely
effective at preventing spam from reaching end users. However, when
I looked at the increasing spam volume and projected my future
filtering budget, the expenses would have been huge," said Mark
Lemmert, CTO for Athenet. "The ASR has done exactly what TurnTide
said it would do. It reduced the overall spam volume reaching our
network, which allows us to reduce and then control our costs
moving forward. Last December I was expecting to be adding more
filters. The fact that we are now reducing speaks for itself. The
TurnTide ASR is an additional weapon in the war against spam with
easy cost justification."
Laptop Battery Athenet, an independent ISP with over 30,000 customers, had seen
email volume increase by over 300% in one year. Initially, they
invested significantly in filtering technology, which was over 95%
effective at preventing spam from reaching inboxes. However, mail
volume was doubling every few months, and Athenet saw that their
filtering cost would scale directly with the rapid email volume
growth.
About TurnTide(TM) TurnTide(TM) offers a unique, pending, Anti Spam Router (ASR) that eliminates the volume of spam sent to its customers' networks. Provided as a service that is delivered through a network of appliances installed on customers' sites, TurnTide ASR accurately identifies the source of email and then manages the quality of service offered to each. Legitimate senders are given very high quality of service, while spammers get poor quality of service. TurnTide has reduced inbound spam volume by an average of 90% for clients including major enterprises such as Edward Jones and Drexel University, and service providers including Cellular One AZ, Iowa Telecom, and Athenet. The company is headquartered just outside of Philadelphia, PA and its website is at www.TurnTide.com.
Thinkpad TurnTide offers enterprises and service providers a unique
anti-spam service through TurnTide ASR, which sits at the perimeter
of clients' networks and, through TCP traffic shaping, controls the
traffic flow that is allowed into the protected network. The router
identifies the specific point sources of each email and categorizes
the sources dynamically, based on the likelihood that each source
is sending spam. TurnTide then manages quality of service to each
source, providing good quality of service to good sources and poor
quality to poor senders. When TurnTide categorizes a source as a
spammer, it allocates very little bandwidth and resources to that
sender. As a result, spammers cannot force mail into the protected
network so it literally backs up on their own server.
Spam Router (ASR) that eliminates the volume of spam. IP protocol level, TurnTide ASR manages the quality of service that each email sender is given, based on how likely it is that they are sending spam. Legitimate senders get excellent quality of service and their mail flows quickly while spammers are given very poor quality of service and their mail is slowed to a trickle. TurnTide's customers already include Edward Jones, Drexel University, Iowa Telecom, Cellular One AZ and Athenet.
Microsoft "Athenet provides a great example of the realization that is
happening in the marketplace - the realization that filtering is
just one tier in an anti-spam architecture. Filtering can solve the
inbox issue, but filtering cannot stop the spam volume and mounting
spam cost," said Lucinda Duncalfe Holt, chief executive and
president of TurnTide. "Spam is expensive and growing, but TurnTide
ASR can eliminate the volume and the costs -- as it did for
Athenet."

Anti-Spam Router (ASR) is the first in a new class of anti-spam
solutions that provides perimeter-based email security. Sitting at
the edge of the network, TurnTide ASR limits the bandwidth and
resources that spammers can use - the system actually prevents spam
from leaving the spammers' server. This makes it expensive for
spammers to send messages and over time, spammers abandon their
attacks into TurnTide protected networks. TurnTide offers its
clients an E-Series of the product, designed for large enterprises
