Laptop Battery Cumberland County is growing, thanks to Route 55 and its two major urban centers. While it may be no surprise that Millville and Vineland were the major growth areas in the county last year, a new report issued by the county puts that notion into numbers.
With the laptop market growth or the optical media revolution, many computers do not incorporate floppy disk drive anymore.
Thinkpad The Development Review Report, released by the county Department of Planning and Development in February, compiles commercial and industrial development in the county over the last five years.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. Desktop Computer One standout is Upper Deerfield Township, which submitted 18 applications. Its neighbor, Bridgeton, had 14 applications.
Notebooks The percentage of applications coming from Vineland and Millville ranged from 61 percent to 57 percent between 2000 and 2002.
Lenovo Stephen Kehs, executive director for the Department of Planning and Development, attributed the growth in the two cities to their proximity to Route 55.
Hard Drive "Most of the retail community, residential and industrial proposals that are coming in are somehow connected to Route 55," Kehs said.
Travelstar Kehs said smaller communities are lagging behind in growth because of their distance from Route 55, their agricultural heritage and smaller population size.
Gateway The report also shows that people are building bigger homes and stores in the county.
Laptop Parts Last year the average area of construction in the county was 18,827 square feet, as compared with 14,658 square feet in 2001
Software "The significant increase in square feet in the new developments reflect some promise for improvement in the county's local economy over the next few moths," Kehs said.
Hard Drives He added that if the trend continues, the county would experience a moderate growth rate in the next couple of years.
Electronics But he said he is unsure about how the state Department of Environmental Protection's newly proposed Big Map would effect developments in the county.
Canon Local leaders have criticized the proposed map, which highlights areas where development will be encouraged or discouraged by the state. Officials said the proposal would restrict growth in the county.
