UW-Madison enters Kauffman grant competition
Program stimulates entrepreneurship outside the School of Business
Laptop Battery By WTN News • 06/28/06 Madison, Wis. - For the second time in three years, The University of Wisconsin-Madison will have a shot at injecting entrepreneurial spirit into classrooms outside the School of Business.
The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a Kansas City-based organization that promotes entrepreneurship and education, has awarded a planning grant to UW-Madison so that it can compete for a share of $35 million in grants by establishing non-business school entrepreneurship courses and programs.
"Our initiative is creating a cultural change and making the entire university system more entrepreneurial," Kauffman Foundation president and CEO Carl Schramm said in a statement. "We want all students, not just those in business schools, to see the value of thinking like entrepreneurs. We want them to be able to recognize and seize opportunity when it presents itself, no matter what field they find themselves."
UW-Madison will compete with 18 other colleges, universities, and university systems for the grant money. Schools that produce proposals judged to be the most innovative in December by a panel of judges will receive Kauffman Campuses grants.
In its 2003 launch, the Kauffman Campuses Initiative distributed $25 million in grants to eight schools, but UW-Madison was not among them. The state's flagship campus received a $50,000 planning grant to develop a comprehensive plan for cross-campus entrepreneurship as part of a national competition among 30 universities.
