According to Thompson, who has been designing enterprise security applications for nearly 20 years, network anti-spyware defenses are fundamentally different than anti-virus. This difference presents important challenges to security administrators. Unlike the black and white world of anti-virus, where all viruses are bad and a computer is either infected or it's not, nearly all spyware applications fall into a gray area. A network sniffer tool found on an IT manager's computer, for example, is probably authorized and shouldn't be classified as spyware, yet a similar tool found on the CEO's desktop is probably spyware.
