Google, Microsoft Settle Lee Employment Suit

Thinkpad (AXcess News) Reno - Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) have reached an agreement over Google's employment of Dr Kai-Fu Lee which ends the suit between the rival Internet Search providers.

Laptop Computers Neither Microsoft nor Google would comment on the terms of the settlement regarding Lee.

It’s no surprise that eBay may want to be more competitive against Google these days. Yahoo and Microsoft are also feeling the heat of the competition with Google’s Gmail and chat service. According to various reports, eBay is in discussions with Yahoo and Microsoft to consider forming a mega force to compete against Google together. eBay has not confirmed the reports, saying only that they are often in talks with both Yahoo and Microsoft.

Laptop Computer Google hired Lee to run its research facility in China. Lee was a former vice president at Microsoft and the software-maker was concerned that Lee would disclose information about Microsoft's developments which Microsoft argued Lee was under a non-disclosure non-compete agreement that was still in affect at the time that Google hired Lee. According to Microsoft, Lee still had 7-months under the term of his employment agreement. The disputethrew the two web search giants into court.

Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.

Notebooks Today's settlement comes just three weeks before Google and Microsoft were scheduled to go to trial in Seattle.

Lenovo Google and Microsoft have been fiercely competing for share of the global Internet search market and both companies have built up a presence in China.

Hard Drive Lee was a former assistant professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and a five-year employee of Microsoft in Redmond. Lee was born in Taiwan and raised in Tennessee.

Travelstar Microsoft chairman Bill Gates testified in September that Dr. Lee was the no. 2 person influencing Microsoft's China strategy.

Gateway Google testified that Steve Balmer, Microsoft's chief executive, had used profane language to describe Google and Lee, suggesting that the battle between Google and Microsoft over Internet dominance was personal.

Laptop Parts Microsoft generates less than 1 percent of its revenue from China which is the world's no. 2 computer market. Microsoft disclosed that as of June 30 global sales had declined by 8 percent. The Redmond Washington-based software maker is looking to China to boost sales.

Software Lee was hired by Google in July to open its research center in Beijing, China. When Microsoft sued they claimed that Lee was a Washington state resident and therefore his employment terms were in affect. Washington state judge Steven Gonzalez ruled in Microsoft's favor, barring Leefrom working on technical research at Google beforethe trial, which was slated for early January.

Hard Drives Google had counter-sued Microsoft in federal court, arguing that the employment agreement was invalid under California law, but US District Judge Ronald Whyte refused to consider the suit until Microsoft's case in Seattle was resolved.
