Hired Hunters Take Out 141 Deer In Bernards Twp.

Laptop Battery Professional hunters have so far killed 141 deer on county-owned parkland in Bernards Township, and the deer advisory task force chairman said nearby residents should see a difference this spring with less deer damage to their shrubs and gardens.

Laptop Computer A residents' group that opposed deer hunting has continued to implore township officials to try nonlethal means to control the herd, such as installing more roadside reflectors to reduce deer-related car crashes.

Resident youth hunters age 16 or 17 years old must purchase a youth hunting license and a $10 youth deer gun license (antlered or antlerless) for each deer hunted, unless exempt. Resident youth under 16 years of age are exempt from the purchase of a hunting license, but they must purchase a youth deer gun license for each deer hunted. All resident hunters under 18 years of age are exempt from the purchase of a fishing and hunting legacy permit.< >

Desktop Computer Jane Books, a spokeswoman for Bernards Citizens for Rational Deer Management, said the reflectors, now being used as part of a pilot project, have cut down on accidents and should be used more widely. She also complained that the deer bait used by the paid hunters is drawing deer from the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge, which borders the Lord Stirling Park.
